Research in the Aldridge group is centred on Main Group and Transition Metal organometallic chemistry, ranging from fundamental studies of structure/bonding through to applications in and small molecule activation/capture and anion recognition/sensing. An over-arching theme is in the synthesis, stoichiometric and catalytic reactivity of potent Lewis acidic systems.

The work is/has been supported by a range of sources including the EPSRC, the EU, charities (e.g. the Leverhulme Trust), governmental and industrial partners (e.g. BP, DSTL/MoD, SCG). Recent post-doctoral have also been sponsored by external agencies including Marie Curie actions, NSERC, the DFG, the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung and the Talentia program. Research has been recognized by two recent awards, and has given rise to over 180 publications, including reports highlighted in Science, Nature and Angewandte Chemie.

Work by the group on molecular detection in collaboration with former colleagues in Cardiff has recently been commercialized as part of a sensor system for toxic environmental contaminants.

The group for 2016/17 numbers seventeen: four post-doctoral research associates, nine doctoral students and four Part 2 undergraduate project students. Our research is carried out in the state-of-the-art Chemistry Research Laboratory (CRL) on Mansfield Road.
