City Rowing Club on hunt for next generation of coxes
City of Oxford Rowing Club is on the search for a new generation of coxes to steer its rowers to success. By holding a training course on the afternoon of Sunday 24 October, followed by an evening session the next week, it is confident that hopefuls will ‘give it a go’ and grow to like the rather unusual aspects of the role. “It tends to be an excellent job for people who maybe want to be involved in an outside activity and like being with other people, but don’t particularly want to row themselves,” says club captain Amy Jackson. “The cox is a crucial part of any crew. The ‘ninth person’ in an eight makes or breaks the race with his or her skill and strategic decisions, as we see every year in the Oxford and Cambridge boat race.” She says a good cox will typically be assertive, eager to learn, and physically small or slim. “But these aren’t strict conditions – we’d like to encourage anyone interested to get in touch. You don’t even need a loud voice these days as we have microphones!” she adds. Jo Thoenes from Oxford’s Fox FM radio station recently learnt first hand what coxing involved when she steered the Oxfordshire Fire Service to a narrow defeat at the hands of their Cambridgeshire counterparts at the Oxford City Royal Regatta in August this year. Jo says: “I had the most incredible time over the nine months we trained for the race. When on race day I looked back to day one of training I couldn't believe how much I had learnt and gained from the experience, not least on the social side of things! Plus it made watching the Olympic finals all the more exciting, as I felt I really knew something of the sport.” The course costs only £20, which also entitles the participant to join the rowing club free of charge afterwards, should they want to continue coxing. Anyone interested should call John Hill on 07946 419711 or email handson@onetel.com
