JUSTINIAN’S DIGEST : Character and Compilation

by Tony Honoré

This new book is a study of the character and compilation of one of the most influential works in the history of Western culture. It was put together in the three years 530 - 533 AD by Justinian’s commissioners under the direction of Tribonian.

Amounting to some 900,000 words, it remains part of the law in South Africa and some other countries. It is the first surviving document to contain texts, attributed to Ulpian, to the effect that by nature we are born free and equal. The controversial and fascinating story of how it was composed is explored in detail.

JUSTINIAN’S DIGEST : Character and Compilation ISBN-10: 0199593302  is published in hardback and consists of 238 pages at £50.00. Postage and packing is free in the UK. Elsewhere add £3 for the first copy and £1 for each additional copy. It can be ordered from Oxford University Press.
