The annual varsity match took
place on 9th May with Oxford defending the Rose Bowl against a strong
Cambridge squad. The tournament was contested in glorious sunshine on the
Backs at St.John's Cambridge, accompanied by the screams of punters
engaging in ramming manoeuvres on the river nearby and watched by a crowd
of enthralled, but apparently mentally deficient, Tab spectators. They
seemed happy to risk death by running in front of the shooting line to
fetch stray footballs, frisbees and children. Sadly, an ever observant
umpire prevented the competitors from testing their skills on a moving
target. Possibly thanks to these partisan efforts, which contributed to an
already considerable home advantage, the Tabs scraped a narrow victory for
the combined first team score. We made a point of being suitably
unimpressed that they had enough space in their back garden to shoot the
tournament, but it wasn't a bad setting, as you can see from the photo.
This is most of the team, with the exception of those who had already made it to the pub, still clinging onto the rosebowl before it was prised away from us.
