2001 Regatta Preview
(Released 06/08/01)

Preparations are in full swing for the Oxford City Royal Regatta on Saturday 18th August. The Regatta, which is organized by City of Oxford Rowing Club and sponsored this year by Tessella and Courier newspaper group, is one of the oldest in the country, with the Regatta Trophies dating back to 1841.

Over 250 crews from rowing clubs all over the country (including local rowing clubs and colleges), as well as from abroad, are expected to take part. About 600 people, ranging in age from 10 to 70 years, will compete in about 50 events, many sponsored by local companies.

The course is 1000 m on the Isis, starting just below Folly Bridge next to Christ Church Meadows, and finishing at Longbridges (near Hinksey Weir). Races will be held at 2-3 minute intervals throughout the day without a break, starting at 9.00 am and finishing at about 7.00 pm.

The highlights of the day will include:

Invitation Corporate Eights

6 crews of beginners, sponsored by local companies to learn to row at City of Oxford Rowing Club and compete in a Regatta within 8 weeks. This year’s sponsoring companies are Edmundson Electrical, Exitech, Oxford Glycosciences, RT Harris & Son (Electrical Contractors) and WS Atkins. [Further details]

This year A.R. Wentworth (Sheffield) Ltd. have donated a new Trophy to the Regatta, which has been designated the Corporate Eights Challenge Cup and which will be presented to the winners of this event.

Invitation Adaptive Sculls

Single sculling events for disabled rowers, organized in conjunction with Oxford Adaptive Rowing.

Attendance by Twin Town Guests

Crews from Bonn (Germany) and Leiden (The Netherlands) have been invited to take part in the Regatta as guests of City of Oxford Rowing Club. Awaiting confirmation.

Events for Junior Rowers

Boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 18 who have learned to row at City of Oxford Rowing Club will take part in a range of  single- and crew sculling events. Demand for these events at the Regatta has increased sharply as a result of the City of Oxford RC's involvement in Project Oarsome (a national initiative funded by the ARA and Sports England to recruit local school children into rowing).

Ergometer Competition

A Rowing competition on Concept II rowing machines open to all comers (including spectators). Medals and other prizes will be awarded to the fastest over 1 minute within a range of categories for men, women, juniors, seniors, rowers and non-rowers. [Further details]

Attendance by Lord Mayor

The Lord Mayor of Oxford will attend the Regatta, and will present prizes to winning crews at the Finish at Longbridges (on the towpath side of the Isis), between 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm.

The Regatta is free to spectators, who can watch the racing all day from any point along the towpath between Folly Bridge and Longbridges. Refreshments will be available throughout the day from the marquee next to the Finish at Longbridges or from the bar at City Boathouse at Donnington Bridge.
