How to Pronounce My Name?
A lot of people ask me how my name is pronounced. The truth is that it is usually very hard for English speakers to pronounce my name correctly, but if you would like to give it a try here are a few tips:
- The ‘O’ should be pronounced as in ‘off’ or even better as in ‘Oregon’, not as in ‘open’ or ‘over’.
- The stress is on the second syllable (‘ra’) and not on the first one (‘Of’). If you are not sure what this means, this might help: the English words ‘offend’, ‘object’ (when used as a verb), and ‘guitar’ (assuming you are not Mark Knopfler ‘playing the guitar on the MTV’) all have their stress on the second syllable – just like my name. On the other hand, the English words ‘offer’, ‘object’ (when used as a noun), and ‘sofa’ all have their stress on the first syllable (not like my name).
- Despite what some people seem to think my name does not sound like (nor is it otherwise related to) Oprah Winfrey’s first name.
And a small tip on my last name:
- The ‘g’ is hard (as in ‘guitar’ not as in ‘German’).
