Hello!

My name is Joshua R. Melville, and I am a second year DPhil atudent at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. I study within the Information, Communication, and Social Science program and am supervised by Dr. Bernie Hogan, which is awesome.

My work is in a somewhat preliminary stage, but several areas of interest have nevertheles emerged:

• There are problems with both the capture and the representation of social networks.
  • How can we make name-generators better?
  • How can we best develop interactive network capture and visualisation software?
  • The cognitive artifacts of social network visualisation remain relatively poorly understood. How should we theorise these artifacts, and how can we develop visualisations appropriate for specific uses?
• How do we address the problems brought about by personalisation and algorythmic determinism?
  • Can we use techniques form social network analysis to empower users and promote informational transparency?

Outside of academia, I record and perform music under the name Fragments.
