The ECVP98 party will be held on Tuesday evening (25th August) in the form of a three hour River Boat Cruise (with music and bar) on the River Isis. The cost will be £9.00. You can reserve a place for the cruise when booking your accommodation.

The ECVP98 Conference Banquet will be held at Wadham College on Thursday 27th August. The cost of the four course dinner will be £25 and places can be reserved at the same time as booking your accommodation.

Accommodation

The principal accommodation for ECVP participants will be in several Colleges of the University. The four Colleges and the ISIS Guest House listed below all offer comfortable and very reasonably priced accommodation with a washhand basin in each room but please note that these are not hotel rooms with room service. If you would prefer to stay in a hotel we list several possibilities below but it is likely that the cost will be two to three times more expensive than College accommodation and you will have to make your own arrangements with the hotel. There are small differences in the cost of College accommodation such that St Edmund Hall is the cheapest and Merton the most expensive and the price differences roughly reflect the differences in the standard of accommodation: many of the St Edmund Hall rooms are in newer blocks whereas most of the Merton rooms are older, particularly spacious and some overlook Christchurch Meadow.

All Colleges offer very good Dinner, Bed & Breakfast rates so that ECVP participants can meet together and dine "in hall" in traditional College fashion and we encourage all participants to choose this option. All the Colleges listed below are within a short walking distance of the University Schools (where the conference sessions will be held) as well as being close to the centre of Oxford.

(Note that the only accommodation option for the first evening of the Conference (Monday 24th August) is Bed & Breakfast, since there will be a reception and buffet at Wadham College before the Perception Lecture. Likewise, if you intend to go to the Conference Dinner (Thursday 27th August), you should book Bed & Breakfast for the Thursday together with the Conference Banquet option.)

Once you have registered, you can book accommodation, using the on-line booking system, for yourself and also for a spouse or partner who will not be attending the conference sessions. Wadham College has a number of twin rooms, although note that the cost is the same as for two separate single rooms. Children under 12 cannot be accommodated in Colleges so if you intend bringing children, we suggest that either you make your own arrangments (see Web pages below) or you book accommodation through us at the ISIS Guest House (run by St Edmund Hall) which has double, twin and family rooms and is a ten minute walk from both the centre of Oxford and the Conference sessions.

Colleges

Merton College

Hotels

Hotel accommodation in Oxford is both difficult to find in the height of summer and typically quite expensive. The closest hotel to the University Schools is the Eastgate Hotel (100 meters from the Schools) where the Bed and Breakfast rate for ECVP delegates will be £55 per person per night sharing a double room or £75 per night for a single room. To book accommodation at the Eastgate Hotel, you should contact Jo Cox at the hotel (quoting ECVP) on +44 1865 248244. Website: http://www.oxlink.co.uk/oxford/hotels/eastgate.html

The Bath Place Hotel is situated five minute walk away from the Schools and has single rooms which vary between £85 and £125 per night (including breakfast) and double rooms which vary between £90 and £130 per night (including breakfast). To book accommodation at the Bath Place Hotel, you should contact the hotel on +44 1865 2791812. Website: http://www.oxlink.co.uk/oxford/hotels/bathplace.html

If money is not a consideration, we recommend the Randolph Hotel in Beaumont Street, as featured in "Inspector Morse" (£99-145 per might for a single room) (Phone +44 1865 247 481) and the Old Parsonage Hotel in Banbury Road (£120 per night for a single room)

Cheap accommodation

The Youth Hostel in Jack Straw's Lane, Headington provides cheap accommodation in shared dormitories (about £10 per person, per night). It is situated about 3 kilometers from the centre of Oxford and the Conference sessions but there are frequent buses to and from the city centre. (Telephone +44 1865 762 997, Fax +44 1865 769 402)

Travel

Oxford is readily accessible by rail and road and from outside the UK via London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Please note that as parking is very difficult in Oxford, we recommend that you do not hire a car while you are staying in Oxford.

Air:

Oxford is about sixty five kilometers northwest of Heathrow airport and served by a very good bus service (X70) which departs every half an hour during most of the day. The journey takes just over one hour. The X70 buses depart from both the Central Bus Station (for those arriving Terminals 1, 2 and 3) and from Terminal 4. The timetable can be found at http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk

If you are staying at either St Edmund Hall, Merton or Wadham College, you should ask the driver to let you off at the "High Street" stop which is a few minutes walk from all three Colleges. The "St Clements" stop is closest to the ISIS Guest House. The final destination of the bus is the "Gloucester Green Bus station" which is close to the centre of the city. If you fly into London's Gatwick airport, there is a direct bus service to Oxford (X80) which operates every two hours and the journey takes about two hours. The timetable can be found at http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk

Train:

There are frequent direct trains from both Paris and Brussels to Waterloo station in London. To continue by train to Oxford you should cross London on the Bakerloo Line Underground from Waterloo to Paddington station from where there are direct trains to Oxford every hour. The journey from Paddington to Oxford takes just under one hour. Timetables can be found at: http://www.rail.co.uk/ukrail/planner/planner.htm

From Oxford station, an Electric Bus (No. 5) runs every every twelve minutes. For Wadham College, ask for the "Blackwell's bookshop" stop (journey time 5 minutes) which is100 meters away. For Mansfield College, ask for the "Mansfield Road" stop (journey time 8 minutes) which is100 meters away. For St Edmund Hall or Merton take the 52 bus from the station or, if you have a large amount of luggage, you may prefer to take a taxi.

Bus:

There are two direct bus services from London (departing from both Victoria Station and Marble Arch) to Oxford: the Oxford Tube 100 and the Oxford City Link X90. Between the two services, a bus leaves for Oxford every ten minutes during the day and in the evenings. It is also very cheap. If you are staying at either St Edmund Hall, Merton or Wadham College, you should ask the driver to let you off at the "High Street" stop which is a few minutes walk from all three Colleges. The final destination of the bus is the "Gloucester Green Bus station" close to the centre of the city. The timetable for the X90 service can be found at http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk

Road:

You can now drive from any part of mainland Europe to Oxford using the Le Shuttle train between Calais and Folkestone. From Folkestone, you should follow the M20 towards London and then take the M26 and M25 around the south of London before turning west onto the M40 (at Junction 16) for Oxford. Leave the M40 at Junction 8 and follow the signs for the centre of Oxford. N.B. there is very little parking in the centre of Oxford and none at any of the Colleges so if you do come by car, you may find that you will have to park your car and leave it one or two kilometers from the centre of Oxford after unloading your luggage.
