Welcome to Oxford University Chess Club

For a full list of all our events this term, please see our termcard.

Oxford University Chess Club (OUCC) was founded in 1869 and is the oldest university chess club in the United Kingdom. Our aim is to promote chess in the university, and to play competitively in the local leagues as well as against other universities. The club boasts an active membership of more than 50 ranging from purely social players meeting over a pint to International Grandmasters representing us at the annual match against the University of Cambridge.

We host weekly events at Christ Church college to practice chess. We welcome everyone to come along to our events for free, but we ask you join as a member if you intend to come regularly. We host a variety of events, including:

We have no prerequisites to membership, and there are two membership options:

We also play competitive chess in the Oxfordshire League. We field two teams: one in division 3, for beginner/intermediate and one in division 1 for top players. Each team plays approximately one match per week.

If you're interested in the club and its activities, please feel free to contact us, join our Facebook group or request to be added to our mailing list.
