OUCC Preparing to Welcome Freshers
The Oxford University Chess Club has booked a stall at the 2011 Freshers' Fair (Exam Schools, 5th-7th October). We will be delighted to welcome new members to the club. There are two membership options:
- 1 year membership: £10
- Lifetime membership: £25
As an OUCC member, you will be able to attend our varied events free of charge. These will include:
- Informal chess sessions where you can play chess with anyone from a beginner to a grandmaster.
- Lectures from our top members. Lectures this term are from Thanasis Tsanas and IM Ravi Shanmugam. Last year, these were given by Grandmaster Amon Simotowe , FIDE Master Ravi Shanmugam and Dave Zakarian.
- Simultaneous exhibitions from top British players. Last year we were delighted to welcome Grandmaster Keith Arkell. Next term we are hoping to organise a similar event with International Master, and former OUCC president, Richard Palliser.
- Competitive chess in the Oxfordshire League. We field two teams- one in division 3, for beginner/intermediate and one in division 1 for top players. Each team plays approximately one match per week.

The Oxford University Chess Club (OUCC) was founded in 1869 and is the oldest university chess club in the United Kingdom. Our aim is to promote chess in the university, and to play competitively in the local leagues as well as against other universities. The club boasts an active membership of more than 50 ranging from purely social players meeting over a pint to International Grandmasters representing us at the annual match against the University of Cambridge. We meet every Tuesday evening to play socially and also enter two teams in the local league catering for GM strength competition in the top division to social competition in division three of the league.
