Today, OUMC provides a meeting point for like-minded climbers from in and around Oxford and its universities. More than ever before, we strive to meet the needs of both experienced and novice climbers. Although most of our activities are based around the eight week Oxford terms, our members are active throughout the year in Oxford, the UK, and overseas.
The Club meets every wednesday evening during term-time, from around 9 o'clock in the Gardener's Arms pub on Plantation Road. Outside of term time our members often get together in the Angel and Greyhound pub near Magdalen Roundabout. These informal pub evenings are a good opportunity to meet other climbers, sign up for Club trips, and share climbing yarns over a beer!
The climbing wall at Oxford Brookes University is the only lead-wall in the city and our members can usually be found there just about every evening. Official club sessions are displayed on the termcard. The Club also has its own bouldering wall at the Iffley Road Sports Centre, where members meet on an informal basis (usually monday evenings).
The Club runs single-day and weekend climbing meets throughout term-time to destinations across the UK, including the Peak District, North Wales, the Lake District, Pembrokeshire, Devon, Cornwall, and the South Coast. Information about forthcoming trips is published on the termcard. To sign up for these trips, please come along to the Gardener's Arms on the preceding Wednesday.
Overseas trips take place during every vacation, with recent destinations including Canada, California, Bolivia, Ecuador, Norway, Switzerland, France, Spain, Morocco, Italy, India, Kenya and more. These trips are privately organized and funded by our members and are not usually advertised through the Club website or e-mails. Wednesday evening pub meetings are usually a good place to find out what's going on!
OUMC enjoys a busy and varied socal calendar, with events ranging from formal black-tie dinners to pancake parties, house parties, pub crawls, and the legendary punting & barbecue party. All of these events are open to all of our members and are advertised by e-mail and on the termcard.
OUMC does not offer formal instruction in climbing or mountaineering... however, our more experienced members are always willing to introduce people to the sport and help novices gain confidence and experience. Most of our new members have little or no climbing experience when they join us, but soon develop the skills to be self-sufficient in climbing. For more information about learning to climb with OUMC, have a look at the "Join OUMC" section.
