MEMBERSHIP

Becoming a member of OUMC is easy!

  1. Print off a copy of the membership form.
  2. Send it, along with a cheque to the club secretary.

Alternatively, come along to the pub on Wednesday and you can join straight away—although do remember to bring the membership form and cheque!

Current club membership fee is £23 sterling. Please make cheques payable to the 'Oxford University Mountaineering Club' and mark the back clearly with your full name, your college and the word "membership".

If you are only going to be in Oxford for a short time because you are visiting from another university, there is a single-term membership option for £10.

Benefits of Membership

Members of OUMC receive highly subsidized transport on climbing meets throughout term, can borrow club equipment for use at Brookes and on meets during term (and for even longer trips during the vacations), are allowed full and free access to the bouldering wall at the Iffley sports centre, and are entitled to discounted rates on the many climbing related courses that the club arranges. Naturally, all members are also welcome to the many subsidized social events that are organized for the Club every term. The subsidies come from funds well beyond the subscriptions, so you'll be missing out if you don't sign up!

Importantly, payment makes you an affiliated club member of the British Mountaineering Council, giving you, among other things, third-party liability insurance for all climbing activities within the UK, discounts on equipment from a wide range of outdoor retailers and on travel-related services, as well as cheap mountaineering, skiing and travel insurance.

You will soon make the membership fee back in borrowed equipment, discounts, guidebooks, subsidized parties and dinners, cheap trips and the rest.

Trial Membership

If you are interested in joining OUMC, but need convincing of how fantastic climbing is, you are welcome to attend up to two climbing sessions at Brookes with the Club and the Club's equipment. You may also join us on a weekend climbing trip, but we must ask for a "trial membership" fee of £7 to cover the cost of insurance; however, having had a brilliant time, if you decide you want to come on another meet, we will happily deduct this trial membership fee from the price of full membership!

Once you are a member of OUMC, you may want to take advantage of the BMC's Individual Member upgrade.

After four years of membership to OUMC you will be entitled to honourary life membership free of charge, although for those who want to continue with the benefits of BMC insurance, we do pass on the small fee, currently set at £8.75, charged by the BMC for each club member to be covered.
