(f) International Conferences

(i) Computers and Teaching in the Humanities (CATH). These conferences are organised by the Office for Humanities Communication and the CTI Centre for Textual Studies. Conferences are held within the United Kingdom. Contact the OHC for further details.

(ii) Joint ALLC-ACH annual conference, with location and organization in North America in odd-numbered years and in Europe in even-numbered years. These joint conferences began in Toronto in 1989. 1990: Siegen, W Germany, 5-9 June 1990. 1991: Tempe, Arizona, 17-21 March 1991. 1992: Christ Church, Oxford, 5-9 April 1992. 1993: Georgetown, Washington D.C., 16-19 June 1993. Selected papers from this conference are published in Research in Humanities Computing (Oxford: Oxford University Press), series editors S. Hockey and N. Ide, beginning with the 1989 conference.

(iii) The ALLC was founded in 1973 in support of a series of biennial conferences held in the UK starting in 1970. Locations included Cambridge (1970), Edinburgh (1972), Cardiff (1974), Oxford (1976), Aston in Birmingham (1978), Cambridge (1980). From 1974 the ALLC also held an annual meeting which became its official conference in 1982. Locations included Pisa (1982), San Francisco (1983), Louvain-la-Neuve (1984), Nice (1985), Norwich (1986), Gothenburg (1987) and Jerusalem (1988). The proceedings of many of these conferences were published as separate volumes (see the bibliography). Selected papers from other conference have appeared in the ALLC periodicals.

(iv) The ACH was founded in support of the international conference on computing in the humanities (ICCH), held biennially in North America, since 1973. Locations included Minneapolis (1973), Los Angeles (1975), Waterloo, Ontario (1977), Hanover, NH (1979), Ann Arbor, Michigan (1981), Raleigh, NC (1983), Brigham Young University, Utah (1985), Columbia, SC (1987). The proceedings of most of these conferences appear in the bibliography. Papers from others have been published in Computers and the Humanities. These conferences have concentrated on text-based applications and also education in the humanities including the teaching of writing.

(v) ACL Conferences. ACL sponsors an annual conference in North America and a biennial conference of the European chapter. COLING is a major biennial conference on computational linguistics. Proceedings of ACL and COLING conferences are published by ACL.

(vi) NewOED Conference, held every autumn. The first four conferences were held at the NewOED Centre, University of Waterloo, Ontario, the fifth conference was held in Oxford in 1989, and this series is now alternating between Waterloo and Oxford. (vii) Association for History and Computing (AHC). Two conferences are held each year, one in the United Kingdom, and one in mainland Europe.
