Survey of Humanities Computer-Based Projects

[Jump to Search] | [Additions & Amendments]

Introduction

During 1993 The Office for Humanities Communications (OHC), supported by the British Library Research and Development Department, surveyed every humanities department in the UK seeking information on computer-based projects. The survey resulted in the details of 193 projects being returned. The projects covered a wide range of subjects including archaeology, economics, music, history, literature, classics, and religious studies.

It was always the intention of the OHC to make the resulting information available to the wider community to enable a greater sharing of knowledge. The results were digitised and encoded with a simple tag set. This text file has been converted to a HTML file which can be searched using htgrep, a version of grep developed to easily search documents through the World Wide Web.

Each project consists of one record with a number of fields. Htgrep will search for keywords across all the fields of every record and then display the complete record for each project in which the specified keyword occurs. Take care not to search the database with only words which occur in the field names (for example, "teaching"):

Search the Survey of Humanities Computer-Based Projects

The simple query box below allows you to enter a keyword with which to search the Humanities Survey. All fields in each project record are searched and a list of project records will be returned which match the given keyword. Some wildcard searching is permitted. You can use a full-stop to search for parts of words. For example to find both "manuscript" and "manuscripts" enter manuscript. Boolean searching is not yet permitted although it is hoped to update htgrep to a new version in the near future.
