Useful URLs

These are web sites that I have found useful. If you have found a useful site, please let me know.

Dreamweaver

www.macromedia.com/devnet/mx/dreamweaver/

This is the home page for a collection of Macromedia articles and resources that change frequently and so is worth revisiting from time to time.

Page Design

colormixers.com/

I'm afraid that I have no real sense of colour and so I was relieved to find this site. It will display a set of colours that complement each other.

www.webstyleguide.com

A good source of ideas about general page layout and style.

Images

www.freefoto.com

Contains hundreds of images of everyday items and situations. You can use the images freely for personal, non-commercial purposes providing you credit FreeFoto.com

www.imageafter.com

Contains not only images but also textures that can be used (with care!) as background images to pages. Currently the images are free for personal and commercial use.

CSS

www.westciv.com/style_master/academy/css_tutorial/

This is a site provided by a company that sells a style sheet editor and a guide to CSS. They have made some of the guide content available on line. I have found the articles useful, particularly those covering the difference between classes and IDs; not something we have covered on the course, but you may find them used in other peoples pages. IDs (as opposed to classes) are quite often used in CSS positioning. The articles also cover relative and absolute positioning.

www.dezwozhere.com/links.html

A comprehensive list of all things CSS related. Many useful links to on-line tutorials and guides.

www.csszengarden.com

This site shows what can be done using CSS. The content is the the same for each page - but they look totally different!

www.meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/index.html

Yet another site that covers CSS, with some impressive examples and good descriptions of how they are implemented. The author admits not all the designs will work in all browsers but it is a good source of ideas.

Validation

validator.w3.org

The W3C site for web page validation. Note that in common with many other validators, it validates one page at a time.

validator.w3.org/checklink/

Dreamweaver's built in link checker checks only internal links. This W3C site will check all links on your web site.

Accessibility Legislation

www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1995/1995050.htm

Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995

www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2001/20010010.htm

Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA) 2002

Miscellaneous

users.ox.ac.uk/~rob/ewps/pages/links.html

Rob Eadie, a colleague in OUCS, teaches HTML and web page design. This is his page of links to a large number of useful resources.
