I have traced my HASTINGS ancestors back to a marriage at St Giles' Church, Oxford in 1639 between Anthony HASTINGS and Christian BROOKES. John had come from Wytham, then a village in Berkshire. Christian may have come from Cumnor. They went back to Wytham. Their youngest son John married Martha WILLIAMS in Wytham in 1674. John and Martha had twelve children, but only the youngest, Anthony, got married to somebody called Mary in about 1723, but I have not been able to find this marriage anywhere. Anthony and Mary had one surviving son, John, who married Ann PARK in 1749. John and Ann appear to have only had one son, William, who married Ann CHAMP in 1775. She was the daughter of William CHAMP and Anne SAUNDERS.
William and Ann had five childen, but only the eldest, John, survived. He married Sarah GREEN in Wytham in 1805. The GREEN family goes back as far as the HASTINGS line in Wytham, but I haven't done very much on them. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph GREEN and Frances LARNER.
John and Sarah had nine children, of whom five (or maybe six) had offspring.
John and Sarah's eldest son was John, who was born in Wytham on February 22nd 1808. He seems to have been married twice, firstly to Martha WALKLIN and later to Elizabeth HICKS (1845). He had two children by his first marriage, about whom nothing is known, and eleven by his second. In 1851 John was a woodsman living at Heyfield Hutt, Summertown. In 1861 he was living at 7 Nelson Street, Jericho, Oxford. In 1871 he was living in South Hinksey, Berkshire. He died in 1871. Elizabeth died in 1893.
Henry was apparently the eldest son of John and Elizabeth. He was born in Wolvercote, Oxford in 1842, three years before his parents' marriage. He was recorded as a butcher in the 1861 Census but after that there is no information.
John and Elizabeth's third child was William, who was born in Wolvercote in 1846. His occupation was variously described as "general labourer", "woodsman" and "faggot maker". He married Mary Ann WHITE in New Hinksey, Oxford in 1873. They had two children, John and Albert Edward. In the 1891 census the family is recorded as living at 31 Church St, New Hinksey (now Vicarage Road).
Their sixth child was John, born in Wolvercote in 1853. In the 1881 Census there is a John HASTINGS at the Royal Artillery barracks at Woolwich, Kent. He was descibed as a "Gunner, Royal Artillery". Although the date is correct there is insufficient information to be confident that this is the right person.
Elizabeth was born in St Paul's parish, Oxford in 1856. She married William James WINCHESTER, a blacksmith, in South Hinksey in June 1881. They had three children. John William born in Oxford in 1889; Albert Edward in 1892 and Annie Florence in 1894.
Eleanor was born in St Paul's, Oxford in 1857. She married Charles KING in South Hinksey in 1880. He was a railway engine driver. Their daughter Mary Ellen was born in March 1881. At the time of the 1881 Census they were living at 23 Bridge Street, St Thomas, Oxford.
James was the ninth child of John and Elizabeth. He was born in St Paul's, Oxford in 1859 and baptised on Easter Day. He was an agricultural labourer in the 1881 census. He married Louisa (Lucy) NUTT in South Hinksey in 1887. They had five children. James was baprised in Oxford in 1888. Ethel was baptised in 1889 but died in 1890. Andrew was born in Fyfield, Berks in 1891. Frederick was born in South Hinksey in 1898. There was also a fifth child, Albert. James died in Oxford in 1941
Andrew was born in Fyfield, Berkshire in 1891. He was a leather worker . He married Annie Helen GREEN, the daughter of john Henry GREEN, in Oxford in 1912. They lived at 88 Hayfield Road in Oxford. Andrew probably served in the Army in the First World War. They had four children. Andrew died in the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford in 1981.
Margaret Alison was born in Oxford in 1912. She was a confectioner. She married Stanley CROSS in 1933, and they had four daughters. Margaret died in Sussex in 1987.
Their second child was Henry James, born in Oxford in 1914. He married Phyllis May WAINE in 1939, and they had two children.
Their third child was Peggy Eileen, born in Oxford in 1918. She was also a confectioner. She married Percy MOULDER in Oxford in 1939, and they had three children.
Their fourth child was William Andrew, who was born in Oxford in 1923. He married Dorothy Edith STOCKWELL in about 1942 and they had two children.
Frederick was born in South Hinksey in 1898. He married Mabel ABBS and they had a daughter Eileen.
Joseph was born in Oxford in 1861. He was an agricultural labourer. He married Jane Bates in South Hinksey in 1883. They had eight children between 1884 and 1898.
Albert Edward was born in Oxford in 1863. He married Jane Elizabeth SWADLING in South Hinksey in 1888. He was an agricultural labourer. They had four children. Albert Edward was born in August 1888 in South Hinksey. He died on November 13th 1918 in Bulgaria while serving with D Company, 8th Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, and is buried in Plovdiv Central Cemetery. The CWGC citation gives his parents' address as 35 Lake Street, Oxford.
Arthur John was born in 1890 but only lived for a few days. Kate was born in 1892 and Cyril in 1900.
John and Sarah's third child was Rachel, who was born in Wytham on May 21st 1810. She married Thomas STATES in Oxford in 1833. No offspring of this marriage have been found.
Their fourth child was Charlotte, who was born in Wytham on December 1st 1812. She married Jeremiah STYLES in Wytham in 1834. They only had one child, James, before Charlotte died in 1837, and nothing is known about him.
John and Sarah's fifth child was James (my Gt Gt Grandfather), who was baptised in Wytham on April 30th 1815. He married Sarah BRAIN in St Ebbes, Oxford on December 26th 1836. From 1837 to 1842 James was the parish constable at Deddington, Oxon, and later at Adderbury. James was a porter at Worcester College from 1842 to his death in 1889.

In 1851 James and Sarah were living at 38 Clarendon Street. By 1861 they were living at 1 Walton Street, and in 1871 at 3 Worcester Street. All these were college houses.
James and Sarah had nine children.
Their eldest son Charles was baptised in St Ebbes in 1837. He was a publican, and also a saddler. He married Mary Ann ACOTT in Oxford in 1860. They had five children, of whom only one, Elizabeth, survived to get married. She married William John CURTIS in Oxford in 1887, but no offspring have been found of this marriage.
The next of James and Sarah's children was James (my Gt Grandfather), who was born in Deddington, Oxon in November 1838. He married Emily (Emma) CARTER in Oxford in 1874. James was a saddler and harness maker in George Street in 1881, but he hasn't been found in the 1861 and 1871 Censuses. James and Emma had four children, of whom only the eldest, Charles Frederick (my Grandfather), got married and produced offspring (as far as I know).
James died in 1916 at 19 Hill View Road, Oxford. Emma died in Cowley Road Hospital on June 4th 1937, but where was she buried?
Charles and Elsie HASTINGS, c.1932
Charles Frederick's first marriage was to Lizzie MARKHAM in 1902. They appear to have had several still births and sickly children who didn't live very long. Lizzie herself died in 1910. Charles Frederick's second marriage was in 1923 to Elsie DUKE, and this produced two sons, Stanley Charles Gordon (my father) and Kenneth Charles. Charles Frederick HASTINGS was a scout at Trinity College.
Stanley HASTINGS married Cynthia Audrey KNIGHT in Oxford in 1951. They had two sons and a daughter.
Kenneth HASTINGS married Cecelia Mavis DUNCAN in Banbury in 1953. They had two sons.
Frederick Charles had a brother Frederick James, who witnessed his wedding in 1923, but nothing else is known about him.
Next of James and Sarah's children was William, who married Harriet JESSETT in South Hinksey, Berks, in 1864. There is something strange about this one. In the 1871 Census there is a Helena HASTINGS living with James and Sarah, with a son William, aged 2 and apparently born in Radnorshire, Wales. In 1881 William and Helena were lodgers at 22 Cambridge Terrace, and William was a lodger at 2 Walton Street. The simple answer is that William was married twice, but the trouble is that I haven't found a death for Harriet, or the marriage of William and Helena, or William's birth. I suppose that the most likely explanation is that William was illegitimate and thus registered with Helena's maiden name. William and Helena might not have been legally married.
The next of James and Sarah's children was Rachel, who married Thomas LEACH in Oxford in 1879. They don't seem to have had any children.
Next was Jane, who married John Henry HONE in Oxford in 1870. They had four children, of whom the eldest two were last known in the 1881 Census and the youngest two were living with their aunt Rachel LEACH in 1891.
Finally was Thirza, who married her cousin Charles ROBINSON in Oxford in 1871. Only one child has been found so far.
Next of John and Sarah's children was William, who was baptised in Wytham on May 26th 1817. He married Mary TOMKINS in Wolvercote in 1841. They had nine children, of whom seven produced offspring.
First was Elizabeth Sarah, who married Henry BUSTIN in Wytham in 1869. They had seven children.
Next was Emma Elizabeth, who married Alexander CARTER in Wytham in 1874. They had five children.
Next was William Henry, who married Caroline HANCOCKS in Brecon in 1880. They had one daughter, who died young.
Next was Henry Thomas, who married Mary MITCHELL in Wytham in 1877. They had five children.
Next was Ellen Anne, who married William MEDCRAFT in Wytham in 1878. They had two children.
Next was Edwin James, who married Emily WEBB in Wytham in 1882. They had four children.
Last was Frederick George, who married Fanny SMITH in Cowley St John, Oxford, in 1888. They had two children.
The last of John and Sarah's children was Susanna. She was baptised in Wytham on March 21st 1824. She had an illegitimate child named Frederick in 1842, and then married Thomas ROBINSON in Wytham in 1846. Frederick married Mary HANKS in South Hinksey, Berks in 1865, and they had three children. Susanna and Thomas had four children. One of them, Thomas, married his cousin Thirza HASTINGS in Oxford in 1871.
