I am a Research Officer at the Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE), Department of Economics, University of Oxford, and an Associate Member of Nuffield College.

As a development and labor economist I have a keen interest in two overarching topics in economics - risk and education.  Most of my research focuses on Africa, where economic development and individual welfare are particularly affected by risk and investment choices in education.  My research analyzes both the consequences of different types of shocks (mortality, conflict and volatile harvests), as well as strategies that households, individuals and firms employ to mitigate the economic consequences of shocks.  In the area of education, I study whether adult learners and students invest more in education when returns are higher or rise due to policy changes.

Methodologically, my research combines formal models with data-collection since the necessary data often does not exist, and has made use of natural experiments, field experiments and a framed lab experiment.
