The ARTFL Project, University of Chicago (2004 - 2011):
- Responsible for the overall management (text curation, maintenance, web development, etc.) of the
ARTFL French language databases and digital reference collections, among the largest and most widely-used in North America. Designed and implemented new Drupal installations of both the ARTFL and the ARTFL Encyclopédie websites. Lead project manager on a number of important collaborative digital projects, including:
- Balzac. La Comédie Humaine. Online critical edition of Balzac’s Comédie humaine, with La Maison de Balzac, Groupe international de recherches balzaciennes (GIRB), and Université Paris 7.
- The Encyclopédie Méthodique, digitization project for the 200-volume 19th-century successor to the Encylcopédie, with the CNRS, Centre Jean Pépin UPR76.
- The Bibliothèque Bleue de Troyes, with the Médiathèque de l’agglomération troyenne (MAT) and the Collaborative Initiative for French and North American Libraries (CIFNAL)
- The Montaigne Project. Online edition of the Essais with digital page images of the Bordeaux copy, with Montaigne Studies, University of Chicago.
- On a more technical level, I worked closely with ARTFL programmers in the research, development, and implementation of PhiloLogic, ARTFL’s full-text search and retrieval system, and its extensions PhiloMine, an environment designed to perform a variety of text mining, machine learning, and document clustering tasks, and PhiloLine, a sequence alignment program. PhiloLogic (2006), PhiloMine (2008), and PhiloLine (2009) were released as open source software and have been well received by the digital humanities community.
