here the final draft of the Batty et al 2013 paper published in Journal of mathematical Biology, entitled Foundations of a mathematical theory of darwinism. My three coauthors are pure mathematicians, and this paper corrects
mathematical errors and obscurities while simultaneously generalising my 2002 paper and my 2006 reproductive value paper. It also presents a generalisation of Fisher's fundamental theorem of natural selection, with a fully explicit proof, and shows it fits neatly into a
framework of individual fitness maximisation. This is the first, but not the last, paper to present the formal darwinism project for mathematicians at the same time as developing core theory. Section, 1, 2 and 7 are intended to be readable by biologists.
