Welcome to the GAO Pages

The GAO is a student-run organisation that aims to promote interaction between Oxford graduate students in all disciplines of archaeology.

We are responsible for organising social activities throughout the year, including parties and barbecues for the young at heart and archaeological movie nights. Dates for all happenings will be posted on the Events calendar. If you have any ideas for activities that you should like to see in action, please contact the Social Secretary with your suggestions.

In addition, the GAO coordinates events of academic interest. In 2005 we organised 'Crossing Frontiers,' a conference aimed at interdisciplinary approaches to archaeology, and we are currently editing the proceedings for publication. In 2007, we hosted 'Vulnerable Objects,' an exploration of material culture change and artefact networks. The GAO also plans a series of workshops each year to offer graduate students opportunities to enhance their practical skills.

Most importantly, members of the GAO sit on various committees within the Department. This includes full representation on the Graduate Liaison, Library, and I.T. Subcommittees, which provides an official avenue for issues and concerns of graduate students to be discussed with members of the faculty. If you have any concerns, please contact us by e-mail, or if you prefer anonymity drop a note in our suggestion box in the front office of the Institute.
