Victoria University of Wellington is offering a special 3-year PhD scholarship commencing in 2000 to honour the research interests of the late Professor Emeritus Don F. McKenzie. The successful candidate will use the rich primary holdings of the Alexander Turnbull Library as well as other specialist archives in Wellington, in any of the following areas of study: bibliography and the history of the book; literary history; Renaissance drama; or New Zealand theatre / theatre history. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds the nation's collection of books, photos, letters, drawings, maps, music and sound recordings which document New Zealand and Pacific history. Other significant holdings are the major research collection on John Milton and his times, a selection of illuminated manuscripts, and New Zealand's largest collection of early printed books and fine printing. The Wellington Theatre Archive at VUW and the recently established NZ Theatre Archive in Wellington also have essential resources.

The scholarship is NZ$12,000 per annum. Scholars who are permanent residents of New Zealand and Australia will, in addition to the scholarship emulment, also be provided with the full cost of their tuition fees and an allowance towards the cost of producing the thesis. International candidates will be responsible for tuition fees of between NZ$10,250-NZ$13,000 per annum and must confirm their ability to cover this cost. First offers are made in late December.
