The McKenzie Trust was founded to honour D.F. McKenzie on the occasion
of his retirement as Professor of Bibliography and Textual Criticism at
the University of Oxford. The Trust Committee - an international group
of book historians, librarians, and literary scholars from the United Kingdom,
Australia, Germany, France, Ireland, the USA, and McKenzie's own native
New Zealand - is seeking funds to endow a legacy recognizing Professor
McKenzie's signal contributions to scholarship and teaching.
The D.F. McKenzie Lecture is an annual
public address delivered at Oxford University by a distinguished scholar
on the history of the book, scholarly editing, or bibliography and the
sociology of texts. The Inaugural D. F. McKenzie Lecture was delivered
in June 1996 by Dr. David McKitterick, Librarian of Trinity College, Cambridge,
who spoke on the history of the Cambridge University Press. Professor Roger
Chartier, Directeur d'Études, Ecole des Hautes Études en
Sciences Sociales, Paris, delivered the Second Annual Lecture in June 1997.
The Trust is committed to continue to bring the most important scholars
working in book history, bibliography, scholarly editing, and the sociology
of texts to Oxford. In the next several years, speakers will be coming
from the United States, Australia and/or New Zealand. Thus far, we have
raised an endowment of more than eighteen thousand pounds toward securing
the future of this event. We need to reach our goal of twenty-five thousand
pounds in order fully to endow this lecture named for one of the Oxford's
great scholar-teachers. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
