The name Hannabuss

The name Hannabuss in a variety of spellings is attested in Devon since the late sixteenth century when a pikeman of that name enlisted in the militia preparing to repel the Spanish Armada in Plymouth.

Like many others who bear the name I am apparently descended from Philippe Hannibus (15?-1657) who came from Halberton near Tiverton in Devon. For most of the eighteenth century the name was more usually spelt Hannabus (the spelling still used by the Australian branch of the family), but a second s was added towards the end of that century. My branch of the family remained in the Tiverton area until my father's generation.
