Modal Logic Reading Group, Hilary Term 2010

Mondays 2-4pm, The Conduit Room, New College

We shall be working from "A new introduction to modal logic" by Hughes and Cresswell. The plan is to work through selected exercises from this book on alternate weeks, and read technical papers in philosophical logic that would otherwise be inaccessible on the other weeks.

Week 3

• Read chapter 1 (particularly p13 onwards.) Ex: 1.3, 1.4
• Read chapter 2. Ex: 2.1b, g, 2.3, 2.4,
• Read chapter 3. Ex: 3.1a, 3.3, 3.5

Week 4

• Timothy Williamson. On the structure of higher order vagueness

Week 5

• Read Chapter 4. Ex 4.1 d, h, i 4.2
• Read Chapter 6. Ex 6.3, 6.8, 6.9, 6.10, 6.11 and Ex 7.1 from chapter 7

Week 6

• David Lewis. 'Counterfactuals', Blackwell Publishing 1973, p14 and Chapter 6 Section 6.1

Week 7

• Read Chapter 7. Ex 7.1, 7.3-7.6
• Read Chapter 8. Ex 8.2
