"Have you ever had to go outside to make a call on your mobile because you can’t get signal indoors? Or are there places in your house where you can’t get wifi? Well, my research could make stopping these frustrations as simple as redecorating your rooms."
"I work on the recently discovered class of metamaterials. Metamaterials can be used to control the motion of electromagnetic waves like those used for your mobile phone coverage, wifi, or TV and radio. By controlling the motion of the waves with the metamaterial, we can make the wave move around structures like pillars and walls which get in their way. This means that the walls become invisible."
"So far metamaterials haven’t really got beyond the lab. But I’m developing paints and sprays which may be easily applied to existing surfaces, or applied to new structures. This would then mean better communications for everyone in locations like airports – and you’ll be able to make that call without having to go outside."
