This page describes the operation of the

Kent Family History Society

mailing list.

This list is for members of the Kent Family History Society. It's purpose is to enable members to converse with each other, to receive important information from the Society and get email assistance to queries. In brief it is a "Global Branch" of the Society for those members with access to the Internet.

To join the list:
NB: ONLY members of KFHS are able to join the list.
Email Derek Maytum (derek.maytum@btinternet.com) giving your name, address and membership number which will be checked against the current membership list. The subject line for the message should say "SUB KFHS".

The remainder of this is, essentially, the same as the list's "info" file. The information is only of use to Society members who have "subscribed" to the list.

Please note that general Society correspondence cannot be dealt with by electronic mail.

... now some boring stuff that you will only ever look at if you have to read through it to find the bit you really want 8-) ...

This list (but not the subscription requests, see above) is being administrated by Malcolm Austen (I work for Oxford University Computing Services who are hosting this list). You can contact me as

owner-kfhs@maillist.ox.ac.uk
or, if you prefer, as
malcolm.austen@oucs.ox.ac.uk

List administration messages should go to

majordomo@maillist.ox.ac.uk

For details of majordomo commands (eg. for accessing the list archives) send the one word message "help" to that address.

... please keep reading ... this is here to be helpful
... and it does eventually get to the interesting stuff
...

This list is NOT moderated, messages will be distributed to the list without any form of censorship being applied. But:

Hopefully common sense will avoid the need for a formal list "charter".

Every effort will be made to forward mail quickly, but no responsibility can be taken for any loss of mail or data, or of any consequences thereof. Note particularly that there is no formal commitment on behalf of Oxford University to provide this service. The restriction of this service to KFHS members offers some protection from junk mail and the intentional distribution of viruses, that said everyone using the Internet will accept that regrettably there is some 'risk'.

The list is being archived in the hope that the list messages will, one day, become a useful resource. The monthly archives are, in any case, available for fetching by subscribers (send "index kfhs" to majordomo will show you the filenames).

This list is "closed", that is subscription requests are all referred to me and email for distribution will only be accepted from subscribers. The "lists" command to majordomo will not show this list and requests for list details (eg. the archives and the subscription list - "who kfhs") are only available to subscribers. I hope this policy will ensure a low "noise level" (ie. few non-KFHS mailings).

The most likely problem you will have is if the email address you are subscribed by differs from that in your mail headers - majordomo uses them to decide whether you are a subscriber. Compuserve users in particular should note that if they elect to move away from the numeric address form, they will need to amend their subscription to this list.

... ah! Finally it starts to get interesting ...

Messages for distribution to the list subscribers should be sent to

kfhs@maillist.ox.ac.uk

Messages from the list will automatically have the subject prefixed with "KFHS" and the text will also have two lines appended:
# This message came from <sender's email address>
# via KFHS@maillist.ox.ac.uk - Kent FHS members' discussion list

I would suggest that you "try out" the list by sending a one or two paragraph biography to the list.

If you do decide to leave the list, you can do so without having to ask Derek or Malcolm (as long as you are working from the address by which the list knows you) -

send "unsubscribe kfhs" to "majordomo@maillist.ox.ac.uk"

If you have changed your address, or ISP, you will have to quote your old address that is to be unsubscribed in the message -

"unsubscribe kfhs old@address"

I hope you stay, and enjoy!
Malcolm.
