The University of Oxford Newcomers' Club is an organization, run by volunteers, whose aim is to help the newly-arrived wives, husbands or partners of visiting scholars, of graduate students and of newly appointed academic members of the University to settle in and to give them the opportunity to meet people in Oxford.
The Newcomers' Club operates out of the University Club (11 Mansfield Road, Oxford, OX1 3SZ) where every Wednesday during the University term (and the week before term begins and the week after term ends) we hold a coffee morning from 10.30 a.m. until noon. Informal coffee mornings are held also during the vacations every Wednesday - do come along and register as soon as you arrive in Oxford.
There is no charge for membership but prospective members are required to register on a Wednesday morning between 10.30 am and 12.00 noon. They will then receive a programme about the many activities of the club and can book for events (using cash or a cheque as payment). Tickets are required for all events.
'Pay and Display' parking is available in Mansfield Road.
Each term the Newcomers' Club arranges a programme of events including visits to places of interest inside Oxford, for instance to the Ashmolean Museum, the Bodleian Library or to the Oxford colleges. It also usually organizes a coach trip to interesting places near Oxford. Many of these trips give the Newcomer a chance to visit places not normally open to visitors. Visit the Calendar page to see a list of all the events run by the club, including the coffee mornings.
Bookings for these programme events start at the first meeting of each term. Do come early in the term to make your bookings as spaces fill up quickly.
If you prefer paper versions of the full termly Programme of Events, these are available for visitors to the Club by application in person. After you are a registered member of the club you will receive each term's Events programme via e-mail.
We look forward to meeting you and making your stay in Oxford an enjoyable one!
