- 1969-71:United Nations Association volunteer teacher
of English as a Foreign Language, Bahrain Government secondary
schools, Arabian Gulf.
- 1971-1983: British Council Overseas Career Service. Postings: training at
Birmingham University 1971-2; Kuwait (1972-4), Algeria (1974-6), Baghdad, Iraq (1980),
Thailand (1980-2), HQ Consultancies Department, London (1982-3), with oversight of and
regular visits to curriculum development projects in Somalia,
Yemen, Oman. Resigned 1983.
- 1976-9 (whilst on study leave from the British Council):

Council Post-Experience Fellowship pursuing PhD research in
Arabic socio-linguistics
