Committee

The OUAC committee is elected each year in May, the day after the annual Varsity Match against Cambridge. The officers are chosen by majority vote by those members in person at the meeting.

All members of the club are encouraged to stand for a position on the committee at the AGM. There are many different roles to fill, and no one personality type is required.

At the AGM itself, those standing for a position on the committee are required to give a brief presentation. Following this, questions may be directed to the nominee from the floor. If the position is contested, an election then takes place in the absence of the nominees.

The committee also has the discretion to co-opt a member during the year, should it so desire.

Depending on the time of year, the committee meet three to four times per term. The executive committee, made up of the President, mens/womens Captain, Treasurer and Secretary also meet with the Senior Member and the executive of the cross country club during the term. The president, captain and secretary also sit on the Achilles Club board, and the president and captain on their respective blues committee.

If you have any queries about the roles of those on the committee, please do not hesitate to contact them. This is particularly the case if you are considering running for the position in the forthcoming AGM. Below are some profiles of this year's committee - just to prove that really anyone can get involved!

Previous Committees
Current Committee
President matthew johnson at jesus oxford
Matthew Johnson
photo Matt Johnson is a fourth year chemist who has amongst other thing a cross country blue and a receding hairline… He is only proud about one of those things. An integral part of his presidential speech was that he is Northern; he must have been running low on other ideas. His proudest moment in history was when he marked out the Shotover cross country course to absolute perfection. If you have the time he is always pleased to explain how he managed it. Matt has already won the hearts of many athletes by promising that circuits will be easier than last year!

Men's Captain
Bradford Waldie
photo Bradford is a graduate of Air Force Academy, who jumped 4m 15 in the pole vault at High School before taking a brief 6 year hiatus from athletics. Now fully back in the saddle Bradford is aiming to gain his full Blue this year as he leads his team against Cambridge on home soil.

Women's Captain
Elle Gatehouse
photo

Since exploding onto the scene in her first year, Elle 'pocket rocket' Gatehouse has firmly established herself as a central pillar in the mighty edifice that is OUAC. As Vice Captain, social secretary, sprints squad leader and right hand woman of the President last year , she has arguably been pulling the strings for some time already, and with President Johnson already wrapped around her little finger, world domination seems mere days away.

A closet physics geek, Elle's considerable intellect is matched only by her man-eating, crew-dating and stash-acquiring abilities. Never one to shy away from a bit of exposure for the club, Gators memorably participated the 2011 OUAC Naked Calendar, cheering many people's May with her, um, talents.

On the track, Elle is sure never to miss a training session, and will take every opportunity to lead her team from the front this year. The girl who knows no fear is champing at the bit to turn the tables on the Tabs.

A harder challenge, perhaps, may be Elle's quest to see her co-captain Bradford's name linked into the infamous OUAC pull-tree...but if anyone can do it, Elle, we believe in you...

Honorary Secretary
Caspar Eliot
photo Caspar was a latecomer to the athletics scene, finally realising mid-way through his third year that the reason he wasn’t very good at other sports was his lack of coordination or any semblance of ball-control, but he showed some real promise with the running bits in-between. As Eric rapidly pointed out Caspar’s gangly frame and awkward running style leaves him being far from what you would call a ‘natural athlete’, but he more than makes up for that through hard work and sheer determination. There is also clearly some ability there, as proved by his performance in this year’s blues team. And if you’ve spent more than 5 minutes with him then you may just have heard that he was a part of the 4x400m team that came 4th at BUCS; apparently they’re definitely going to medal next year. In all seriousness though, Caspar will be a big asset to the club this year as secretary, just as long as he’s not in charge of getting us anywhere. His sense of direction has been known to desert him at crucial, not always fully clothed, times.

Junior Treasurer,Membership benjamin white at chch oxford
Ben White
photo Ben ‘Whitey’ White manages to subvert the traditional tall, slender image of the hop, step and jumper by being short and what we’ll politely call ‘stocky’. Nevertheless, when we’re finished being rude the boy can clearly jump, as his debut Varsity victory and strong second place last year prove. In fact, when not messing around with a silly girl’s sport involving sticks and appalling chat, he can also throw and has even been known to sail elegantly over the occasional hurdle. A debut decathlon will have to wait, however, until he can face up to the mental side of the 1500m, having been known to ‘need a breather’ halfway down the runway! A club stalwart through and through, Ben will be putting that engineering brain to work balancing the books, as well as ensuring the continued success of the warm-weather training camp in Portugal. His aim this year? Get someone even faster than European 100m record holder Francis Obikwelu to tell him he’s slow…

Vice Captain (Women)
Katie Holder
photo One of many high profile northerners in the club, Katie joined OUAC in October 2010. A multi-eventer at heart, she immediately made her mark by competing in 8 events at Freshers' Varsity, this was to become a common occurrence. Katie competed in approximately 2000000000 events (no exaggeration) in her inaugural millipedes match in 2011, performing well accross the board in events ranging from the 400m hurdles to the discus and the pole vault. This intimate knowledge of every single event known to man makes her a valuable asset to her team and is sure to stand her in great stead for a fantastic year as Millipedes Captain.

Sponsorship, Alumni cwitcombe at googlemail com
Catriona Witcombe
photo Last years president ruled the club with an iron stomach, all feared her and her circuits. On a weekly basis, she would reduce grown men to a shivering wreck, while she asserted her hardcore dominance over them. However, worried that MJ would go soft without her presence, and the club would no longer have the chiselled beach-bodies that we have become famous for, Cat decided that she must hang on in any way she could to keep order and plank. And so we find ourselves with an Alumni rep who really is an alumna and long may she linger in the background. Never one to only do 4 reps when 16 will do, we are all sure that Cat will bring this often overlooked position into line with the power enjoyed by presidents and dictators alike. Let’s just hope the OUAC alumni following can keep up with her and her organisational prowess!

Fixtures Rep helen hanstock at sport oxford
Helen Hanstock
photo Another one of our alumni hangers-on, Sports Fed President Helen is taking on the role of fixtures rep this year.

Social Secretary #1
Felicity Abbott
photo Dedicated socialite and half-blue sprinter Flic Abbott is a self-confessed crew-date addict. Not only is her love for the dancefloor in Park End great, but her love and commitment to training, being known to continue until she breaks. After an injury ridden season, including a self -induced trapped finger resulting in the infamous 'claw' hand at bucs, everyone hopes she will be fighting fit and back running like the wind to shoe those tabs next summer!

Kit Secretary
Tom Frith
photo Not Andy Heyes. But small, runs 1500m very quickly, and almost indistinguishable from Andy Heyes. Taking over this role from Andy Heyes.
Webmaster gareth morgan at stcatz oxford
Gareth Morgan
photo Regarded as the spirit of the squad, Gareth never fails to impress. Whether it is clearing a bar in the pole vault or creating the most outrageous costume during team photos, Gareth never fails to impress. Not only is he keen when he comes out to standing out among the crowd, he also puts his all into his responsibilities as Webmaster. Expect to see Gareth's infectious enthusiasm permeate the team and the World Wide Web this year as he helps lead the charge in Oxford's triumphant reclamation of the long deserved trophy from the Tabs.
