Manchester Relays (08/10/05)

Oxford sent a team of six men and three women to the Manchester Relays - the first in a series of university races based around a league format.

Courtney started promisingly for the women, enduring torrential rain, (which erased all the flour course markings!) to finish the first leg in 9th place. Rachel Deegan anchored the team in 9th with a time of 12:48, enabling third leg, Laura Kyte, to propel the team into 7th overall, and 5th amongst the University entrants – with a time of 13:03 – on the final leg.

James Hogan led the men’s team out, passing the baton to Moreau, who leapfrogged 11 people, from his starting position of 19th, with a superb time of 10:03. Exciting new prospect, Richard Franzese, marked his OUCCC debut with a time of 10.23 that guided the team to 6th. Fourth leg runner, Alan Chetwynd lost some ground but Bishop on leg five, and David Bruce, in the final leg, overturned the deficit to secure 6th spot overall and 3rd University team. Oxford later jumped to 2nd, as Nottingham University were disqualified for allowing Ed Jackson to run two legs – a rather blatant transgression!
