The Men’s Varsity Match
The Men’s Varsity Match started in 1881, and was won by Oxford. In the years since 1881, the Men’s Varsity Match has been played at several venues, including Oxford and Cambridge, Eastbourne, The Hurlingham Club, The Queen’s Club and the National Training Centre. The Men’s Match was played at Devonshire Park between 1954 and 1963, staged by Eastbourne Borough Council and the Varsity Match returned to Devonshire Park in 2002, being played alongside the professional women's warm-up tournament for Wimbledon. This was the first time the Men’s and Women’s Varsity Matches shared the same venue. Between 2005 and 2007 the Varsity Matches were played at The Queen's Club, London, and since then have been played at the NTC.
In total since 1881 Cambridge have 71 wins and Oxford have 43 wins. There have been 9 ties (up to 1922, the format made it possible to tie). Cambridge has the longest run of 13 straight wins between 1975 and 1987. The Varsity Match has ‘gone to the wire’, with a score of 11-10, six times since 1946. Cambridge triumphed in 4 of those, and Oxford in 2.
The
Women's Varsity Match
Taking the same format as the men’s competition, the annual varsity match
is played over 3 days and a total of 21 matches. Both teams nominate 6
singles players, and up to 2 reserves, who may be substituted in doubles
pairings (making teams of a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 8 players).
Each player plays 2 singles matches, and each doubles pair plays all 3
of the opposing team’s doubles pairs.
The women’s varsity match has only been played regularly since 1946, and
up until 2001 was held alternately in Oxford and Cambridge. In recent
years it has been held at the same venue as the men’s match at Devonshire
Park, Eastbourne, and Queen’s Club, London. However, in 2008 the match
was played at Fenners, Cambridge, over the 25th/26th June. In 2011 the women once again
played at the same venue as the men at the NTC, Roehampton.
