"As a medic, I find that the OUSBMS academic talks are great for exploring beyond what you might hear in lectures in a friendly and more intimate environment. The speakers are always excited to present their research and happy to take questions - a great way to make contacts for the second year project!"

"The society has been a great way for me to engage with my subject away from tutorials and labs. The social aspect of it also provides an excellent opportunity to mix with other scientists in the Medical Sciences Division."

"I have enjoyed being involved in OUSBMS because it has given me the chance to listen to and meet scientists passionate about their research. I also love getting to socialise with students from across the university who are equally geeky about biomedical science."

Thinking of joining?

The Oxford University Society of Biomedical Sciences (OUSBMS) is primarily aimed at students in Oxford University's Medical Sciences Division. This includes the following undergraduate courses:

  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Medicine
  • Biochemistry
  • Experimental Psychology

Nevertheless, anyone is welcome to join and we have members studying anything from Chemistry to Law. We're also pleased to have a number of graduate students on the membership register. Last year we hosted talks from a number of famous speakers, including Professor Frances Ashcroft FRS about her work developing a treatment for neonatal diabetes. We also held a prominent debate, "A Cure for Ageing?" at the Sheldonian Theatre featuring controversial immortalist, Dr Aubrey de Grey, Professor Richard Faragher of the British Society for Research on Ageing and Oxford's very own Dr Lynne Cox. The event was extremely popular, attracting an audience of over 400.

If you would like to join the society or ask us any questions about joining, please contact Jack, the society secretary.
