The ridiculously early start time for an away match of 1.00pm, and it being week 1 of the university’s first term, an army of 6 new faces, met at the usual rendezvous commence the years weekly battle once again. Despite a technologically misguided detour to Birmingham, we eventually arrived at the correct campus, aided by the absence of the usual speed block, fully taking advantage of the mpv. Hurriedly rushed into our first set, after around 5 minutes of warm up we were in some respects we were still in the mpv, and having never played together before we succumbed the 1st set 19-25. It didn’t take us long to get into the game, settling into our roles and positions we took the 2nd 25-21. A slow start to the 3rd could have been disastrous, but some strong defense and tactical serving brought Oxford into the lead, just taking the 3rd 27-25. After getting to know each other better and feeling more comfortable on the court, we relaxed too much convincingly losing the 4th 16-25. It was all to play for in the 5th, ahead 8-7 at the change over, strong service by the opposition proved too much for our serve receive unit, eventually losing out 12-15. Disappointing, but promising for the year to come.
