Henley Women’s Regatta

OUWBC entered two boats into HWR 2012, one of dev squad athletes, & one of Boat Race athletes. After Summer Eights was over, the crews were quick to get into their boats & train hard in the little time that was left between the bumps races & HWR.

HWR rules state that anyone with a Blue is not eligible to compete in any intermediate events; therefore the coxed four which raced for OUWBC was entered into the Senior event. The original draw had Osiris facing Nottingham University in the first round; however, the organisers also decided to subject the S4+ to a time trial. This meant that the 4+ had to finish faster than ten other boats in this category. Osiris were set off in the last 3 boats of their time trials, & after about 100m the wind speed picked up from about 20mph to 37mph over a couple of seconds. Conditions were awful & the crew struggled even with squaring up their blades during the race! Afterwards, the girls had resigned themselves to the fact that they'd probably failed to qualify as a consequence, going back to the minibus to get changed ready to derig once results had been announced. Turns out the four had massively undersold themselves & they'd actually managed to qualify, beating some formidable crews to the top 8 in the process.

Competition was tough for the Frank Harry Cup, with the first round being against Upper Thames RC. After a lengthy attempt to get on the stakeboats in the horrible stream on the Bucks station, there was a clash of blades off the start which led to the Umpire restarting the race. Upon restarting, things were neck-a-neck between Osiris & UTRC until about half way when they began to pull away. It was bowball-on-stern for most of the rest of the course, in a closely fought race which saw Upper Thames eventually come out as winners in a time of 6:57 - the second fastest race time of the day of all boat classes. UTRC eventually emerged as winners of the S4+, beating their opponents in future rounds by margins much greater than that over Osiris, with it eventually transpiring that the women in their boat had 30 more BR points than Osiris did in theirs! Whilst the girls were disappointed to have been knocked out in the first round, they're very proud to have raced such a good race in such bad conditions, coming so close to such a strong & experienced crew. But there's plenty more summer racing to be had!

BUCS

This year's BUCS fell at an awkward time during the Oxford term, making it difficult for OUWBC to enter more than the one intermediate 8+ into BUCS.

Dev squad had only managed one row as the 8 before the regatta thanks to bad river conditions along the Thames in the few weeks before; however, they were pleased with their row despite failing to qualify for the semi-finals.

They've all pledged to be back for Summer Dev Squad where there will be plenty more opportunities to race!

Henley Boatraces

In the Women's Reserves Boat Race, there was nearly a repeat of last year's disqualification debacle. Not long after the start, with Osiris and Blondie neck-a-neck, both crews were warned for their aggressive steering by umpire Sir Matthew Pincent. Shortly afterwards, we began to display our power as we started to row through Blondie, leading by 1/3 length halfway. After more warnings, there was another echo from last year's reserve race as Blondie caught a crab 500m from the line, allowing us to take an unassailable lead. Osiris beat Blondie by 3 1/2 lengths in 6:57.

In the Newton Women's Boat Race, OUWBC were facing a light blue boat with 6 oarswomen and a cox returning from the 2011 race which they lost. Cambridge started at a higher rate, taking an early lead, as we had anticipated. Never quite finding our rhythm, we were down by 1 1/2 lengths by 500m to go, still pushing hard for the line. With 300m to go, there was a crab from the other Cambridge 2 seat, which slowed CUWBC right down. We managed to pull level, but after a hurried restart Cambridge held us to the line, beating us by 1s in a time of 6:38.

WeHORR

OUWBC didn't field any crews for WeHORR in 2011 since it fell so close to the Boat Race. This meant that, this year, Oxford didn't start in a fixed position for the first time in 11 years.

Starting from 201st place, the BB climbed 180 places (the 2nd highest climb of all crews entered) to finish a respectable 21st place overall in a time of 21:04.14.

Considering the considerable drop in stream from the time when earlier crews began and when the BB began, and the number of crews which had to be overtaken, this was an excellent result for OUWBC.

Two development squad boats were entered into the intermediate academic coxed fours, where both crews were knocked out after the semi-finals, being beaten by experienced crews who had been training hard together all year.

Wycliffe Head

Osiris A compete in IM 1 (Men's) in the morning getting a time of 17:17.3. Osiris B break the W IM 3 course record with time 17:25.20 with second place in W IM 3 going to Bristol with time 19:09.1

In the afternoon, Osiris A get their course record in W IM2 time 17:02.78 with Osiris B coming second with a time of 17:47.17. Third place goes to Minerva with a time of 18:59.4 showing Osiris domination.
