Epigenetic changes in genes involved in synaptic plasticity

Epigenetic mechanisms change the expression of genes without affecting their sequence. 

One enzyme responsible for the de novo methylation of genes is the DNMT3A. We found the expression of this enzyme to be upregulated after chronic stress, indicating an increase in gene  methylation. However, knowing which genes has been methylated requires mnore in depth analysis of the gene promoter. Using the Bisulfite sequencing technique, we analyse whether the methylation status of promoter of genes involved in synaptic plasticity such as BDNF has changed after chronic stress (diagram: Larissa Wakefield).
