We recommend that secondary school visits are limited to two hours, and that longer visits include time at other museums and galleries in Oxford.
To help art students focus their efforts we suggest that you book a sketchbook introduction from a member of the Education team.
If you have a particular area of study in mind the Education team can offer short talks focused on particular areas of the collections, such as masks or body art. Please contact our bookings line to discuss your needs.
We have a range of downloadable resources designed for secondary school art groups including our Art Handbook (ideas on how to use the Museum as a resource for artists) and our Art Resources (Worksheets, information and maps on a range of different subjects).
General secondary school visits
We offer half hour object handling sessions for secondary schools. This analytical activity encourages pupils to research objects around the Museum. The maximum group size is 25. Please contact the Museum for more details.
We offer a hands-on workshop on African Music. Further workshops are offered by Hands-On Music in Museums at the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments.
It is possible to combine workshops in both museums.
Special Educational Needs
For all our education programmes, we welcome individuals with special educational needs. If possible, please tell us of any particular needs you have at the time of booking. To help make the most of your visit to the Pitt Rivers, please download the access information booklet (pdf) for visitors with disabilities. (pdf)
The Pitt Rivers Museum is dedicated to providing high quality services for all users and welcomes comments and feedback to help us develop our educational work further.
Booking is essential for all school visits, including self-guided visits.
