This was completely Canada's race, led from start to finish with a punishing pace unmatched by most. Romania, Denmark and Germany battled to stay in touch, with ROM having the best of it for the middle section. At 1750 Canada were long and powerful, still unhurried, then a move by Germany over Denmark and dropping Romania made Starr and Duncan look over and jump a couple of pips to finish. Denmark failed to match Germany and lost second place by a foot.

Great Britain took an early lead here with the Dutch and Greeks closely in contention. At 900 the Dutch pushed hard to snip the lead, which they opened up past the boating area. A late Polish challenge for second place failed by a canvas.
