A whippy start, with much high rating, took Cop, Waddell and Aly off together, Koven not far behind. At 1000 m a push from Cop tried Aly's mettle, but he held it off before Waddell, sculling very maturely, surged at 1450 just as Brekken was sneaking through in lane 1. This move from the field left Aly floundering and Cop pushed through him, taking some of the rest. At 1800 both Waddell and Brekken went again, but were beaten by Cop's experience. Koven was beaten by Chalupa for fourth, with Aly finishing exhausted by his early pace in last position.

In this B-final, packed with sculling "names", (but Andre Willms scratched), the first five hundred was a battle between CRO, LAT, ITA and ROM. At 750 Reinholds gave a strong push and CRO/ROM/ITA shook off the Dutchman briefly. By the boating area the Croatian had dropped back, and the Italian made a huge effort coming towards the finish, taking him sweeping past Taga and nearly snatching first place.
