The Australians led out, with Germany 1 throwing in an early push. A very fast race this, with constant pushes amongst the top three boats, AUS/GER1/NOR. At 1600 the Aussies who had been dropped to third slightly, moved back with a strong push to second, half a length behind the Germans, with Norway only a canvas behind and Ger2 and ITA pushing hard. Astounding racing.

No Austria (scratched). Belgium were off to a very quick start, but were held close by the ret of the field to 500 m. At 750 the French pushed hard, and Russia edged Belgium out, with Denmark and Hungary trailing. Then at 1750 the Frenchhad moved to a close but confident lead over Russia and Denmark, with Belgium's initial efforts having tired them.
