45 Institutions and nearly 300 crews competed in the 1997 British Universities Sports Association Rowing Regatta at Holme Pierrepont on May 3; racing began at 9am, the final race going off on time at 7:22pm following a full day of racing at 6 minute intervals.
Novice events were again highly subscribed (Mens Novice Fours 31 Entries!), but many Championship Events also had both high numbers and very high quality; Mens Championship Sculls attracted 20 entries, with a fair sprinkling of Under 23 and Full Internationals racing in both Mens and Womens events.
Whilst Nottingham University comfortably retained the BUSA Championship for the fourth year, Oxford Brookes and Imperial showed their strength within the Eights racing. Sheffield achieved excellent small-boat results to move up to fourth place, with Kingston also showing well; Bristol, Newcastle and West of England all slipped badly from last year.
It is likely that the BUSA Regatta next year will move to two days as a reflection of the huge increase in competitive student rowing, but more news following our next Committee Meeting
