Priest Spells

Priests get two different lists of spells. The majority of their spells come from the Common List, which is common to all good priests of the Celestial Host. In addition to these, each god grants their followers a special list of spells which are idiosyncratic of that particular deity.

The list below is not the limit of your character's spell casting abilities, but they are the ones which are of use during adventures. Other priestly spells would be concerned with the priest's civillian duties, to do with blessings, marriages, crop ceremonies, and funerals for example (such incantations would take hours and are of little use to the adventurer as a result).

Common Spells
Specialist Spells

Common Spells
Level Spell Verbal Description
1 Power Meld "By the power of [my god] I lend my power to thee" By use of this spell you may transfer as many of your power points to another priest as you wish.
1 Cure Light Wounds "[my god] I implore thee, cure this light wound" You may cure 6 points to a location and six to the body total of the recipient of this spell.
1 Detect Magic "By the power of [my god] I detect the presence of Magic" This spell will tell you whether an item or specific place is magical.
1 Bless "By the power of [my god], may her blessing protect thee" The recipient of this spell gets +1 armour class for the duration of the scene.
2 Hold Person "By the power of [my god], I command thee be still" The spell causes paralysis in one target for 30 seconds or until struck a blow.
2 Chant "By the power of [my god], Warchant" followed by chanting (song etc) Whilst you chant, your allies get +1 to damage. If you are struck the spell is negated.
2 Cure Serious Wounds "[my god] I implore thee, cure these severe wounds" You may cure 18 points of damage on one person to location and body total.
3 Augury "By the power of [my god], Augury" The priest may ask a single question, which can be answered Yes or No, of their god. The vision and knowledge of a god is vast, though in unusual circumstances the information could be concealed by powerful forces.
3 Blade Barrier "By the power of [my god], I summon a blade barrier" This spell creates a swirling mass of blades around the caster, which will cut anything coming close to the priest. The blades move around the priest and there is very little room inside the circle of swords for anyone other than the caster; one other person could be accommodated if they stay very close to the caster and are with them when the spell is cast. The spell has the effect of hurting any monster which comes close to the caster. If you are attacked by a monster, call out "Blade Barrier!" at them, followed by a slow count of One-Two-Three... indicating how much damage the monster is taking. However, you cannot walk into other monsters and damage them, this is a purely defensive weapon. You also cannot run whilst the spell is active (although you can dispel it at will).
3 Cure Critical Wounds "[my god] I implore thee, cure these critical wounds!" Like other curative spells, except this spell restores 30 points and can be split between two locations on the same person (but not between characters).
4 Cure Mortal Wounds "[my god] I implore thee, cure these mortal wounds!" As above, but the amount restored is 40 hit points and you may split it between two locations.
4 Remove Curse "[my god], show mercy and destroy this curse" A curse is a general magic effect, usually from an evil priest, which causes some severe handicap. This spell will remove any "common" curse (such as a reduction in one's fighting abilities). It does not affect physical ailments or wounds. A character who is not of the priest's religeon who benefits from this spell would have to perform some additional service to a god that removed a curse on them (like a donation, a quest or a religeous conversion).
4 True Seeing "[my god], grant me sight beyond sight" This spell allows the priest to see all invisible creatures, all nearby spirits on the shadow plane, or otherwise concealed items; all magic in the area; to see through all mundane or magical disguises; as well as various other forms of sight not listed here. In other words, they are able to see the "true nature" of what they gaze at.
5 Commune "[my god], I would ask of thee..." Like Augury, except the priest may ask a question which can be answered with a sentence of not more than eight words.
5 Heal "[my god], Heal this person" The target character is healed of all damage, disease and poisoning.
5 Holy Word "By the power of [my god], undead evil, hear my Holy Word" All undead in the scene suffer damage. Lesser Undead such as Skeletons, Zombies, Ghouls and minor Shades (creatures with essentially no will of their own) are utterly destroyed. Greater Undead such as Wights, Wraiths and Spectres are reduced to 3 hit points, regardless of their original hits. Undead Personalities (Liches, for example) have their hit points halved automatically. All undead which are not destroyed automatically are stunned for about 5 seconds.

Chevvedaar Spells
Level Spell Verbal Description
1 Resist Pain “By the power of Chevvedaar I resist Pain” This spell makes the priest immune to the effects of pain - specifically it means that (a) Wracking Wounds have no effect, and (b) any attack on the priest whilst they are casting another spell will not disrupt the spell.
1 Vigor “By the power of Chevvedaar, Vigor” Benefit: the recipient gains an extra 20 body hits during the combat. Location hits are as normal (in other words, the priest gets wounded as normal but doesn’t get tired) Condition: no drawbacks
2 Fury “By the power of Chevvedaarr, I summon Fury” Benefit: The recipient does +1 damage (normally doubles) and gets +2 AC from increased recklessness Condition: subject of the spell must go into combat and act out the Berserk for as long as they can see enemies standing. They can tell the difference between friend and foe.
2 SwordBreaker “By the Power of Chevvedaar I shatter that sword!” Shatters target weapon.
3 Fanatic “By the power of Chevvedaar I invoke the Fanatic Spirit” Benefit: The recipient gets +1 damage, any blows they take only do 1 point of damage, and they are immune to any Command type spells cast at you (in other words any spells which affect your mind) Condition: the subject of the spell must go into combat. Furthermore, they cannot tell the difference between friend and foe - anyone standing in their way should get mown down, including party members. The only defence against this is to pretend to be dead!
3 Sword Blessing “By the Power of Chevvedaar, I bless this sword” This spell is often used when a priests is blessing a champion before battle. It will make the sword into a +1 weapon.
4 Berserk “By the power of Chevvedaar, I become the Warrior Berserk” Benefit: recipient gets +2 damage, blows against them only do 1 point of damage, and they are immune to all forms of magic except direct damage spells, which are halved Condition: as Fanatic, above
4 Group Blessing “By the power of Chevvedaar, I Bless us all” All party members receive the effects of a Bless spell (+1 AC).
5 Frenzy “By the power of Chevvedaar I accept the Frenzy” (Special: to be said by each accepting recipient) This spell grants all of the benefits of the Fanatic Spirit spell above, but once cast it will affect as many of the party as are willing - up to the entire party. There is a special limitation in that Berserks do not attack each other.
5 Vorpal Blade “By my power I summon a Vorpal Blade” This spell creates a Vorpal weapon. It immobalises/destroys any body location it hits on most humanoid creatures.

Hulstulein Spells
Level Spell Verbal Description
1 Entangle “By the power of Hulstulein, plants entangle thee” This spell causes the target’s feet to become entangled in the undergrowth/rabbit hole/cobblestones etc for 20 seconds. They may still use their hands and any weapons in them. Note that large monsters may be unaffected by this spell.
1 Slow Poison/Disease “By the power of Hulstulein I halt this infection” This spell slows the effects of poison or disease on a character for 3 scenes.
2 Speak With Animals “By my power I speak with animals” This spell allows the priest to speak with animals.
2 Warp/Shatter Weapon “By my power I warp that weapon” This spell works to destroy the target creature’s weapon.
3 Bear’s Strength “Hulstulein, grant me the Strength of the Bear” The priest becomes very strong, doing +1 damage with their weapon or singles with bare hands (no pun intended...). Roleplaying note - priest becomes very big and impressive.
3 Cure Disease/Purge Poison “By the power of Hulstulein I Purge this Infection” This spell cures any poison or disease of the target that is not a Curse. The priest is able to tell if the disease/poison is “normal” or magical in nature.
4 Mass Entangle “By my power I entangle [target 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]“ This spell will entangle up to five target monsters at once, as per the first-level spell. The monsters must be standing in an area approx 10’ x 10’ to be the target of this spell.
4 Regrow Limb “Hulstulein I implore thee, restore this crippled limb” This spell restores a limb that has been lost by going to negative total hits.
5 Viper’s Venom “Hulstulein, grant me the Venom of the Viper” The priest gains the following abilities: They can Paralyse any monster that they touch with their hands, for 10 seconds; They can spit Poison Bolt 4 up to five times during the encounter; They can deal Wracking Wounds with their weapon. Roleplaying notes - this is a Snake metamorphosis, so lots of hissing and undulating side to side is cool.
5 Resurrection “By the power of Hulstulein, I bring this fallen hero back from the grave” This spell brings a character back from the dead. There are certain criteria which must be met, however. Firstly, the body must be whole - it will not work on ashes or otherwise damaged remains. Secondly, although it will heal all natural damage it will not function on poison or disease, so a person who died of such cannot be Resurrected. Thirdly, it requires the priest to permanently give up one spell point.

Kostrian Spells
Level Spell Verbal Description
1 Wind Blast (Hurl 10) “By the Power of Kostrian, Hurl 10” This spell causes the target (indicated by pointing) to fly backwards ten paces, as if they had just been Hurled.
1 Leaping “By the power of Kostrian, Leaping” The priest may make an instantaneous Leap from their current location to another up to twelve paces away. They must say the verbals and then say “Leaping!” followed by “Landing!” when they land.
2 Wind Walk “By the power of Kostrian, Wind Walk” The priest may walk on the wind. They may ascend at one foot per count (i.e. “one...two....three...” as per the convention for Flying”). The spell lasts for the encounter.
2 Summon Lesser Servant “By the power of Kostrian I summon a Lesser Servant” This spell summons a minor Air Elemental loyal to Kostrian. The priest may request one task of it and then it may leave. It is not very intelligent so it cannot understand complex instructions, but it is fine with ones such as “Fight them!” and “Go over there and spy on those creatures, then come back and tell me what you saw”. The Lesser Servant has the following abilities: It can cast Wind Blast once. It can Wind Walk at will. It has 5 hits. It does Single damage with its hands only (no weapons).
3 Lightning Bolt “By the power of Kostrian, Lightning Bolt 8” The is a Bolt spell that hits a single monster for 4 damage.
3 Fanatic “By the power of Kostrian, I invoke the Fanatic Spirit” Benefit: The recipient gets +1 damage, any blows they take only do 1 point of damage, and they are immune to any Command type spells cast at you (in other words any spells which affect your mind) Condition: the subject of the spell must go into combat. Furthermore, they cannot tell the difference between friend and foe - anyone standing in their way should get mown down, including party members. The only defence against this is to pretend to be dead!
4 Wind Storm (Repulse 10) “By the power of Korstrian, Mass Repulse 10” This power is exactly like Wind Balst above, except that it affects everyone in front of the priest, friend or foe, in a 180 degree arc. Anyone in the area of effect must move ten paces away from the priest.
4 Summon Greater Servant “By the power of Kostrian I summon a Greater Servant” Like the Lesser Servant this is an Air Elemental loyal to Kostrian. It is more intelligent and more powerful. It has the following abilities: It does Single damage with its hands or a weapon. It may Wind Walk at will. It may Hurl creatures it touches, saying Hurl 10 (See Wind Blast, above); It may cast up to three Lightning Bolt 4 spells; It may pick up humanoid monsters and carry them for ten paces before dropping them (grappling is not necessary, only touching with both hands. Grappling counts as a physical).. It has 15 hit points.
5 Chain Lightning “By the power of Kostrian I conjure Chain Lightning: 3 - 3 - 3 - 3” This is similar to Lightning Bolt, except that it may be used to hit several targets at once. The spell blasts up to four tagets for three points each, but each target must be within (approximately) 5 feet of the next.
5 Frenzy “By the power of Kostrian I accept the Frenzy” (Special: to be said by each accepting recipient) This spell grants all of the benefits of the Fanatic Spirit spell above, but once cast it will affect as many of the party as are willing - up to the entire party. There is a special limitation in that Berserks do not attack each other.

Mortan Spells
Level Spell Verbal Description
1 Spirit Walk “By my power I go forth in spirit” Allows the priest to project their spirit - this allows them to walk approx 20 yards in any direction away from their body to, for instance, the middle of the next encounter. A priest in spirit form cannot touch things or be seen. Bear in mind that their body is back in the last clearing and should be protected...
1 Undead Slaying I “By the power of [My God], Undead Slaying 5” Does five points of damage to target undead creature. Living creatures, Elementals and Demons are unaffected.
2 Invisibility to Undead “[My God], render me invisible to Undead” Undead do not see with normal sight - they tend to see everything in terms of the life-force each living (or unliving) thing has. This spell causes the priest to be Invisible to undead for the duration of the encounter.
2 Death’s Door “By my power I prevent this spirit from departing” This spell is not a healing spell, however it does prevent a PC from dying there and then if they have taken too many wounds to live. They will stay alive througout a number of encounters (battleboards) equal to the priest’s level.
3 Speak with Dead “By my power I summon thee, dead spirit” Summons the spirit of a recently dead creature to converse with the priest. The priest may ask the creature one yes/no question per level of priest they have, no matter how agressive or incoherent the spirit is; on top of that spirits which are especially nice may volounteer better information. There aren’t many of those around though.
3 Undead Slaying II “By the power of [My God], Undead Slaying 15”
“By the power of [My God] I smite Undead, 5 - 5 - 5”
This spell has two uses - either it does a large amount of damage to a single creature, or it does a smaller amount of damage to three separate targets (5 each). Living creatures, elementals and demons are not affected.
4 Shadow Walk “By my power I walk the Shadows” The priest may Shadow Walk as if they were a Shade. They must stand still and count “one-thousand, two-thousand” in order to enter or leave the Shadow Plane. Whilst on the Shadow Plane creatures in the mundane world cannot harm you. On rare occasions, though, you might encounter creatures on the Shadow Plane, who can hurt you. Be warned...
4 Finger of Death “By my power, Die” This spell will kill any unnamed creature outright, without question. Against composite monsters and known NPCs it is less effective, doing only (!) a meagre 5 (monster) hits (30 player hits) worth of damage. This will kill many weak NPCs and send the stronger ones cowering back into their evil temples.
5 Raise Dead “By the power of [my god], I return this dead creature to life” This spell raises a creature from the grave. It may be used on PCs who have died.
5 Sword of Undead Slaying “By the power of the Celestial Host I summon a weapon of Undead Slaying” This spell transforms the priest’s weapon into one which does +3 damage against undead and demons. 3 Undead Slaying II “By the power of Pholtus, Undead Slaying 15”
“By the power of Pholtus I smite Undead, 5 - 5 - 5”

4 Dismiss Demon/Elemental “By the power of Pholtus, Demon, Be Gone!” This spell sends a demon back to its own plane. However, it is not an automatic effect. The Demon and the caster must play out a challenge similar to that played when a mage summons an Elemental. The challenge is a game of scissors-paper-stone. The priest has as many “lives” as they have levels (i.e. from 3 to 5). The demon has an undisclosed number of lives; generally for small demons these will range from one to five, but for larger demons it may be as many as ten or fifteen - priests who attempt to dispel such creatures, be warned...
4 Reflect Magic “By the power of Pholtus I reflect thy evil magic” A very potent effect, this spell creates a barrier which will reflect any magic back onto the castor. The priest has as many “lives” as they have levels (i.e. from 3 to 5). The demon has an undisclosed number of lives; generally for small demons these will range from one to five, but for larger demons it may be as many as ten or fifteen - priests who attempt to dispel such creatures, be warned...

Silloth Spells
Level Spell Verbal Description
1 Hawk’s Sight “Silloth, grant me the Sight of the Hawk” The priest’s sight becomes very sharp, so that they may effectively spy on the next encounter without actually entering it. The penalty for this state is that you are unable to distinguish between friend and foe. Anything in your way gets struck. You must fight until you can see no-one else standing - the best defense for your comrades is to pretend that they are dead!
5 Viper’s Venom “Silloth, grant me the Venom of the Viper” The priest gains the following abilities: They can Paralyse any monster that they touch with their hands, for 10 seconds; They can spit Poison Bolt 4 up to five times during the encounter; They can deal Wracking Wounds with their weapon.
