| Pedro Raposo is currently a Magellan
Scholar at St.
Catherine's College, University
of Oxford, reading for a DPhil in the History of Science,
with the supervision of Dr.
Jim Bennett (Museum
of the History of Science, Oxford). Pedro was
awarded a doctoral scholarship from the Portuguese Foundation
for Science and Technology (FCT). He is also
a member of the Centre for the History of Science of the University of
Lisbon (CIUHCT).
Pedro has a broad interest in the development of science and technology and its cultural, environmental and ethical implications. He holds a Master's degree in the History and Philosophy of Science by the University of Lisbon. His Master's dissertation was supervised by Prof. Henrique Leitão (University of Lisbon) and focused on the life and works of the Portuguese astronomer/instrument virtuoso Campos Rodrigues (1836-1919). A book will issue from this work sometime in 2010 or 2011. Pedro's ongoing DPhil work focuses on the circulation and appropriation of organisational and technical knowledge in mid-nineteenth century astronomy and especially on the foundation and early history of the Astronomical Observatory of Lisbon. The multi-dimensional analysis he has been applying to this case implies tackling topics such as the following: organisation of scientific institutions, communities and networks | material culture of science and innovation | circulation and appropriation of theories, values, institutional models and practices | science and politics | science and national cultures. |
