HOW IT WORKS
♣ Small cctv cameras constantly monitor the behaviour of broiler chicken flocks using 'optical flow' - change in image brightness in successive cctv frames.
♣ Every 15 minutes the system delivers its ‘verdict’ about what has occurred in the form of 4 statistical measures of movement.
♣ A high welfare flock (low mortality, low pododermatitis, low hock burn and good gaits) is more uniform (lower skew and kurtosis) than a flock with poorer welfare [ref]
♣ Welfare problems (e.g. hockburn) can be predicted days or weeks ahead [ref]
