Speaker Meetings are held on Monday evenings in the Dennis Sciama Lecture Theatre of the Denys Wilkinson building (map). The doors open at around 8:20pm and the talks begin at 8:30pm. These talks are free for members and £1.50 for non-members. The talks last about an hour. Free refreshments are served after every talk, giving you the opportunity to socialize with other society members, and to meet other people interested in Astronomy. You can also talk to the speaker, and ask them questions about their talk. Observations are usually held on Thursdays, meeting outside Mansfield College front gates (map) at 8:30pm. Confirmation emails are usually sent out on Wednesdays, since due to the weather the session may sometimes be cancelled and replaced with a social event.
You can join our Mailing List to be kept informed of the societies' events. We send out an email a few days before every talk or observations session to keep everyone informed. Simply send an email to space[AT]herald.ox.ac.uk and ask to be added to the mailing list. To join the Society simply come along to one of the meetings (see the termcard) and tell the treasurer that you wish to join. He will be sitting outside the lecture theatre with the societies' cashbox, so you can't miss him! You can also email the committee and let them know that you want to join, and we will get back to you. Membership can be for one year or for life. The cost of membership is £6 for one year, and £12 for life. Non-members are welcome to attend speaker meetings, the cost for which is £1.50. You can visit and join our Facebook group to learn more about the society. You may also be interested in visiting the website for the Oxford Physics Society |
Every term, we build and launch model rockets. These are built in a session at the Denys Wilkinson building using basic materials, so no prior experience is needed. The cost of the rocket motor is £2, all other materials are free, and we will decide when to launch our creations at the session so as to fit in with everyone's schedules. You can use your creative skills to make the most colourful and imaginative rocket designs. A few weeks later we then go to Port Meadow to have an afternoon of fun launching them. You can visit our Rocketry Page to see instructions about how to build a model rocket.
The society has an annual Christmas dinner at the end of Michaelmas term, and everyone is invited! Click here to find out more. Observations on the 1st of March were conducted at Professor Eland's house. Professor Eland kindly allows us to use his telescopes on special occasions during term time, and this is always a fun and enjoyable event. Using his equipment the spectacular picture below of Saturn was taken.
The society also periodically arranges guided visits to the Wetton telescope, which is used for research at Oxford University. |
