Current Research

My current research is looking at the sustainability of ornamental fisheries in Puerto Rico. The study strives to understand ornamental fisheries on this Caribbean island through user perspectives, market forces, ecological and public policy aspects.  Public policy revision is needed to further ensure the protection of ornamental species, for the health of the ecosystem and for the benefit of users.  Local government agencies lack knowledge on the ornamental species trade and this study is an effort to change that.  There are four main goals of the project: understanding user perspectives and socio-economic relationship to the trade, carrying out a global market analysis, conducting species population and habitat assessments, and analyzing public policy to develop recommendations.

Topics of Interest

My main focus is looking at the use and conservation of natural resources through an interdisciplinary approach.  I’m interested in the management of marine resources as well as the design and implementation of public policy that takes into account user needs and perspectives while making sure ecological conservation is achieved.
