The Oxford Tango Club was formed to promote the dancing and enjoyment of Tango Argentino at the University of Oxford.
Because our classes, workshops and other events are organized in cooperation with the Baker's Opera
they are open to everybody, not only University members.
To make learning easy, we run a cycle of classes each term exploring one subject in depth. A termcard costs £40 and includes
not only the eight classes, but also eight practice-sessions which can be attended either on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
In 0th week, before the start of a new cycle, we always run an absolute beginner's drop-in class so that you can try out
if you like our style of teaching. In between terms we also run drop-in classes for the more advanced dancers on demand.
The classes are taught by Ben, Katja, Abbey and Philip.
All four have come to know and love Argentine Tango as a dance which gives space to both partners in the couple to explore and to play,
to connect and communicate on a level not often experienced in everyday life, to get to know each other and ones own joy of movement -
and all that to the tones of some of the most fabulous music ever written for the dancefloor.
Ben, Katja and Abbey started their tango life in Cambridge, Philip in London. Amongst the teachers that have since influenced
their dancing and teaching are Eric, Komala and Stefan from El Corte,
Claudia Jakobsen, Chicho Frumboli, Homer and Cristina Ladas, Alex Krebs, Moira Castellano
and Sebastian Arce and Mariana Montes. In their classes they focus on technique for improvisation and partner connection.
Dance movements are taught to suit a busy dancefloor. Step sequences feature occasionally, but only to momentarily illuminate principles.
Events which you are extremely welcome to drop by at are the practicas (£1) at the University Club. Practicas are there for you to work on your tango in a way that is not feasible in a milonga setting. That doesn't mean the evenings are joyless - quite the contrary: they are both fun and relaxed. Everybody is welcome to attend, but if you are a graduate or staff of the University it would be great if you could become a member of the club (which is free). If you are not, this is not a problem - please sign yourself in at the reception if asked.
In addition to the regular schedule we organise workshops by visiting teachers which also appear on the calendar.
