1st Week - Thursday 23rd January - Creative Writing Class


An author who used to live in Northmoor Road leads writing exercises showing how plots in general, and a scene in LoTR in particular, can develop unexpected twists. Bring a biro and an open mind.

2nd Week - Thursday 30th January - The Great Film Debate


The motion is: "The Two Towers: It's A Great Film, But It's Not Tolkien" This will be a moderated discussion, with individual contributions kept short so that everyone has plenty of chances to express their thoughts.

3rd Week - Friday 7th February - Pancake Party & AGM


Meet at Carfax tower, 7:30pm. The traditional not-Shrove-Tuesday Pancake Party. We will proceed from Carfax to Aram's palatial rooms in West Oxford a short walk away.

4th Week - Thursday 13th February - The Serious Quiz


Come along and see how far you can go - the questions will start easy. Then discover amazing little-known facts about Tolkien and Middle-Earth which some society members are spookily familiar with. The top scorers will go on to represent us in Cambridge, probably on Saturday 8th March (when all are welcome to come along and cheer).

An Unexpected Party At Helm's Deep


The biggest TolkSoc event of the year. There will be dancing, quaffing, sumptuous food, and a chance to meet fellow Tolkien fans from the Society present and past. The dress theme (optional, and to be loosely interpreted!) is: "An Unexpected Guest at Helm's Deep".

6th Week - Thursday 27th February - Dramatic Reading and Recording


We will be showing Peter Jackson how it should be done, reading scenes from The Two Towers with flair and drama as Tolkien would have wished them interpreted.

6th Week - Saturday 1st March - Minibus Trip


Features of the English landscape that inspired Tolkien's vision of Middle-Earth. A tour to include the standing stones of Avebury, the White Horse at Uffington, and ancient monuments and barrows. Departure time and place to be confirmed

7th Week - Friday 7th March - Speaker Meeting/Video Night

Meet Rose & Crown pub, North Parade, 8 pm (Sponsored by the Orcish Dental Association.) We will meet at the Rose & Crown, go to see the new blue plaque on Tolkien's Northmoor Road house, and proceed on a Tolkien-themed tour of Oxford's ancient drinking houses.
