1st week - Friday 24th January - Film Night

Christ Church - LR2 - 8pm

Easing gently into the start of a new term, we'll be showing the animated version of The Lord of the Rings.

2nd week - Friday 31st January - Dance Practice

Christ Church - Bayne Room - 8pm

Nothing so vigorous as the Springle-ring! Try some traditional folk dances, in anticipation of the banquet later in the term.

3rd week - Friday 7th February - Quiz Prep

Christ Church - Bayne Room - 8pm

Warming up for the annual battle of wits with our foes who punt from the wrong end, an evening of questions ranging from the trivial to the tricksy.

4th week - Friday 14th February - Speaker Evening

This term we are delighted to host Oxford's very own Dr. Stuart Lee, member of the English Faculty and Merton College, and co-author of The Keys of Middle-Earth: Discovering Medieval Literature Through the Fiction of J.R.R. Tolkien, among other works. Stuart's talk will be related to A Companion to J.R.R. Tolkien, the new book he recently edited, and will be titled:

"Creating a Tolkien Companion"

5th week - Thursday 20th February - Geek Quiz

Christ Church - Lecture Room 2 - 8pm

In the legendary Geek Quiz, members of Oxford's geekiest societies get together in order to battle it out for the crown of "team who won that term". A really fun evening, and who knows, you might even get an answer right occasionally...


Poetry Evening

Christ Church - Bayne Room - 8pm

"It ain't what I call proper poetry, if you understand me: just a bit of nonsense."

Nonsense or sense, bring your favourite bit of poetry along (Tolkienian or otherwise), and enjoy an evening of delight in the spoken word.

5th week - Friday 21st February - Pre-Banquet Costumes/Preparation

Christ Church - Bayne Room - 8pm

If you want to put the finishing touches on your costume, or help with decoration/food, come along for a relaxed evening in the company of the Tolkien Society.

5th week - Saturday 22nd February - Banquet!

North Oxford Community Centre - 2pm until late

For one night only, a gate to the Dwarven kingdom of Erebor will be opened in northern Oxford; expect food, drink and general merriment under the Lonely Mountain. (Places must be booked in advance, sorry.)

6th week - Thursday 27th February - Minor Works

Christ Church - Bayne Room- 8pm

Join us for a laidback discussion of Tolkien's minor works.

6th week - Friday 28th February - Pancake Party and AGM

Location TBA - 8pm

It's time once more to elect a new committee, and to aid us in this most difficult of tasks we will be providing pancakes. Bring along your favourite topping!

6th week - Saturday 1st March - Varsity Quiz

Christ Church - Blue Boar Lecture Theatre - 2pm

Come along either to take part in the quiz, or just to watch, if you'd prefer, as we attempt to regain our honour by defeating our Cambridge rivals in a battle of wits.

7th week - Friday 7th Match - Crafts Evening

Christ Church - LR2 - 8pm

Interested in making your own cloak? Several members of the society already have, and this evening will provide tips and advice on how to do so, as well as the opportunity to look at cloaks already made.

8th week - Friday 6th December - Fanworks Evening with Harry Potter Society

Christ Church - Bayne Room - 8pm/8:30pm

In a relaxing end to the term, we'll be having meeting to discuss the various pieces of art, fiction etc. produced by fans in tribute to their beloved stories. The Harry Potter Society will be joining us this week from 8:30pm for a joint meeting discussing all relevant bits of fanfiction etc. - come along for what should be an excellent evening with plenty of good company.
