4th week – Thursday 9th February – Speaker Evening: Maria Artamonova

Monday 14th Solmath SR8079 / Elenya 20th Hísimë VIII24

Christ Church – LR2 – 8pm

Tolkien's Middle-earth was always conceived by him as an 'alternative' past for our own world, but his ideas about how exactly his invented history blended with real history changed over time. The talk traces the English origins of the Elvish lands and discusses how Tolkien considered the idea of time travel to get his narrators across the sea of time from the Oxford of his day to Middle-earth. Anglo-Saxon England looms large in these narratives as an important 'missing link' between his world and ours.

Dr Maria Artamonova trained as a medievalist at Oxford University and teaches Old and Middle English at the OU Department for Continuing Education. She also lectures on Tolkien and C.S Lewis extensively and works as an English-Russian translator.
