Taruithorn Termcard, Michaelmas Term 2002

Venues for meetings:

Christ Church College, Lecture Room 2, unless otherwise advertised

Please note: The majority of events are now taking place on Thursdays

First Week - 17th October - Introductory Talk and Drinks

Brief welcoming talks by society president President Peter Yacavone and Oxford-based author Colin Jack (whose father knew Tolkien, and once attended an Inklings meeting). Meet your fellow Tolkien and fantasy fans!

Second Week - 24th October - Dramatic Reading and Performance

We can do better than Peter Jackson! We pick some dubious scenes from the film, and read them as Tolkien would have wanted them interpreted - we think! All who come are invited to participate and opinionate.

Third Week - 31st October - Spooky Pub Crawl

We'll be touring Oxford's pubs and pointing out famous sites both Tolkien-related and generally sinister.

Third Week - Friday 1st November - Fireworks

Gandalf's Fireworks meeting. Meet ChCh Gates 7 PM. Sorry, we can't do the magnificent Dragon this year.

Fourth Week - 7th November - Quiz: Whose Ring Is It Anyway?

A Tolkien quiz with a strong call-my-bluff element. No previous experience required - quick thinking and a sense of humour will be more important than Tolkien knowledge!

Fifth Week - 14th November - Debate: Who is the Greatest?

Who will be remembered as the greatest fantasy author of the 20th century? J R R Tolkien? C S Lewis? J K Rowling? Philip Pullman? Contributions from the floor welcome.

Sixth Week - Friday 22nd November - Video Night

Titles TBC. Possibly including special edition FoTR

Seventh Week - Friday 29th November - Mathom Party

Find a new home for that useless junk you never got round to throwing out

Eight Week - Thursday 5th December - Speaker Meeting

Patrick Curry, author of "Defending Middle-Earth: Tolkien, Myth and Modernity", will be speaking on the subject of "Tolkien, Weber & Enchantment".
