Those events marked with ** are open to all comers, except where otherwise noted. If you'd like to continue coming to our events after this, we ask that you join the society; membership is a very reasonable £8 per year for new members (£10 for existing members) and includes food and drink at many events.


** 1st week - Friday 17th October - Freshers' Moot **

Fun and frivolity as we begin the first meeting of term with nibbles and games. Come along and meet members old and new in the pleasant surroundings of Tom Quad.

** 2nd Week - Sunday 19th October - Tolkien's Oxford **


Christ Church Tom Gate - 2pm


Get your bearings and become wise in the way of Tolkienian triviata as we take a stroll around Oxford.

** 2nd Week - Friday 24th October - Dramatic Readings **

Appealing to the thespian in each of us, we practice and perform various scenes, in a suitable ir/reverant fashion. Participation is non-compulsory, but encouraged (and fun!).

** 3rd Week - Friday 31st October - The Trial of Fëanor **

Most gifted of the elves, he rebelled against the gods themselves. In our mock trial, he faces charges of theft, filicide and terrorism. Join us as witnesses and jury.

** 4th Week - Friday 7th November - Speaker Meeting **

Leon Berger will be coming to talk to us on some of the music of Donald Swann, which was inspired by C.S. Lewis and Tolkien.

4th Week - Saturday 8th November - Gandalf's Fireworks


Magdalen Bridge - 6pm


Celebrate the season of frosty nights and clear night skies with a fireworks party fit to rival those of Gandalf himself! Hot baked potatoes, mulled wine, and an assortment of cakes to ward off the winter chills. There is a supplementary charge of £2 to help cover costs.

5th Week - Thursday 13th November - Whose Ring is it Anyway?

Frantic improvisation is the name of the day, with some, little or no relation to Tolkien according to taste.

5th Week - Friday 14th November - Film viewing

Seven years on, how has the first instalment of Peter Jackson's interpretation aged? We'll be watching the extended edition in the comfortable surroundings of the Bayne Room.

6th Week - Friday 21st November - The Foods of Middle-earth

A culinary tour and discussion of Middle-earth cuisine. Delectable delights including that trifle of Saruman's and lembas - no cram to be found here!

7th Week - Friday 28th November - Mathom Party

"... for anything that Hobbits had no immediate use for, but were unwilling to throw away, they called a mathom..."


A party with a twist. Bring along your least wanted possession. You will leave with someone else's. It can get competitive!

7th Week - Saturday 29th November - Banquet Dance Practice

Nothing so vigorous as the Springle-ring! Try some traditional folk dances, in anticipation of next term's banquet.

8th Week - Thursday 4th December - How to Write Bad Fan Fiction

There's good, there's bad, and there's so bad it's brilliant! Come along to hear some famous examples, and see if we can outdo them.

8th Week - Friday 5th December - Rankin and Bass Cartoon


Christ Church Bayne Room - 8pm


Wind down from term by joining us in watching the infamous cartoon version of The Return of the King, complete with singing orcs! There should also be time to bid friends au revoir before the vacation.
